Texas High School Football Kicks Off
The Class 4A Sweetwater Mustangs (#8 in 4A DII) from the West Texas Region made it clear at Lowery Field in Lubbock, TX Thursday night they are back for another successful season. The Mustangs coming off of a state quarterfinal qualifying season, dominated their season opener against Class 5A Lubbock High Westerners from the North Texas Region.
With 1:52 left to play in the first quarter, the Mustangs already lead the Westerners 14-0, and that momentum just carried over throughout the game.
The first play of the second quarter Jacoby Hunt rushed for a first down for the Mustangs, then had a completion to WR Max Gomez for another first down. It appeared that Lubbock was going to make it a game when, down the field, Lubbock High’s Sean Fiveash nabbed an interception for the Westerners. Their celebration wouldn't last long though, as the Mustangs immediately got back on rhythm with a "pick six" from Michael Lawrence. The score extended the Mustang lead to 20-0 with 10:04 left in the second quarter.
With 5:31 left in the half, Sweetwater found their way back into the red zone again. Chris Thompson finished the drive when he rushed for another touchdown. Just a few plays into the Mustangs’ next drive, Lowell Williams had a 54 yard touchdown run to answer the Westerners. After another two point conversion, the Mustangs' lead was 42-7 with 9:05 left in the third quarter. The Westerners responded again - making their way back into the red zone but just couldn’t get the job done, turning the ball back over to the Mustangs.
With 2:21 left in the third, Sweetwater’s Adrian Vizerra had a 61 yard carry to the Westerners’ 19. Another 6 points went up on the board for the Mustangs, and Chris Thompson scrambled for the two point conversion stretching Sweetwater’s lead to 50-7 with 1:49 left in the third quarter, which is also how the quarter would end.
Early in the fourth, Sweetwater’s Lowell Williams grabbed an interception to put the Mustangs back on offense. With 5:31 left to play, the Mustangs added their final touchdown of the game. Sweetwater took the opening game win with a final score of 56-7.
