North Texas 3A Texas High School Football Friday Night
The #9 ranked 3A DII Post Antelopes have had quite a successful start to their 2015-2016 season, and Friday night they showed no signs of slowing down. The Class 3A DI Denver City Mustangs traveled to Post, TX in an attempt to give them some competition this week, but the Antelopes stole the show yet again.
The Mustangs found trouble early when multi position player Cole McLeroy went down and was unable to return. Despite the loss, Denver City still put up the first points of the night. With 2:36 left to play in the first quarter, QB Kade Patterson connected with TE Broedy Burris in the end zone. Omar Perez added an extra point to that, which put the score at 7-0 Denver City.
Post answered at the start of the second quarter when QB AJ Escobedo found Blaine Reece for a first down completion. It didn’t take too long for the Antelopes to make their way into the red zone. With 10:24 to play in the first half, Reece found the end zone for their first touchdown of the night. Aron Lopez handled the extra point to tie the game up 7-7.
The Antelope defense which dominated the entire night, forced Denver City to punt on their next possession.
Post’s very first play back on offense, RB Cambry Gilbert took it up the middle and broke away for a 55 yard touchdown run. Lopez added a kick, and the Antelopes took the lead 14-7 with 8:47 to go in the second quarter.
With 5:11 to play in the third quarter, the Antelopes were starting to find their rhythm after a slow start to the second half. Gilbert, carrying the offense, rushed for a first down and then immediately earned another off the lateral from Escobedo. Just a few plays later, Escobedo hit Gilbert on the post for a 39 yard touchdown pass. Lopez’s extra point attempt was good, giving Post the lead 21-7 with 3:33 left in the third.
Post RB Cambry Gilbert continued to tear up the turf in the fourth quarter as well. With 10:53 remaining in the game, Denver City was forced to punt yet again. The Antelopes easily fell back into their offensive rhythm with Gilbert’s rush for a first down.
With 8:40 to play in the game, Gilbert exploded up the middle for another long run - this one 57 yards for the score. The extra point was good, and the Post Antelopes stretched their lead over the Mustangs 28-7.
After the game, Post RB Cambry Gilbert explained what the motivation was for the Antelopes’ dominating performance over the Mustangs.
“What really got us going was losing to them 3 times in a row. We just wanted to get a really good win over them,” he said.
The Antelopes put the Mustangs away Friday night in Post, TX with the final score 28-7.
Next up for Post will be a trip to Floydada on the 18th. For Denver City, they will travel to Littlefield.
