Five Big Things in Texas High School Football
It's that time again… time for my Five BIG Things! These are the things that stood out for me recently as it relates to Texas high school football. As usual, they are not listed in order of importance – just as they come to me. And yes, I know another site recently added their "5 big things" but as with just about everything cool surrounding "the greatest sport in the greatest state" ™ we did it here first and best!
Well opening weekend is past us and the stories they generated are countless. Here are some things that stood out for me...
1. Streaks are made to be broken - You couldn't turn around this weekend without bumping into a streak that ended. It was a definitely a week of new beginnings for old streaks.
Houston Scarborough ended the longest losing streak in Texas high school football history - 58 games after an 18-14 win this weekend against Houston KIPP Sunnyside.
New Head Coach Keith Alex (the 3rd in three seasons and 4th since the streak began in 2009) said, "It was a huge win for the team. We are going to build off this win and keep grinding."
Northside Brennan's 34-game regular season win streak was busted at Smithson Valley in one of the most exciting offensive battles (35-28) I've seen in awhile. These 'regular season' and 'district' win streaks are ones I don't generally take too seriously until they reach 50 or 60, but it was still a good run by Brennan.
The biggest streak to end had to be Dallas Highland Park's 84 game home win streak that fell to Pulaski Academy (ARK) in convincing fashion 40-13. The Scots hadn't lost a home game since 1998!
The Allen Eagle's streak however is alive and well - 45 consecutive wins after their victory over Viera (FLA.)
2. Lufkin comes back from 39 points down – The Lufkin Panthers lost a heartbreaker in the opening week (21-20) against Longview so were in need of a win. In the second game of the 12th annual Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic at Rose Stadium, they faced off against the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. Down 42-3 in the first half, the Panthers stormed back - forced the game into overtime and won 52-49 in overtime.
3. Community wins big in loss – I went to the Wimberley vs Giddings game thinking I was just going to see a good game. It turns out, I saw so much more. I saw a community come together around football at the first home game for the Texans since the devastating Memorial Day flooding. I won't rewrite the whole thing here - just read the article I wrote after the game.
4. Good Ol' Fashioned Barn Burner! - You know when you throw eight (8) touchdown passes and lose, it was an offensive showdown. That is what Graham did in their 59-53 loss to Brownwood. Graham QB, Landry Turner notched a school record 486 passing yards en route to his 8 TDs. The questions it raises for me: Is Brownwood better than I thought? Is Graham worse? Will either team be able to put together a defense that can compete in the playoffs?
BROWNWOOD
First Downs: 19
Rushes-Yards: 40-178
Passing: 307
Comp-Att-Int: 13-16-0
Punts: 1-31.0
Fumbles-Lost: 0-0
Penalties-Yards: 7-75
GRAHAM
First Downs: 27
Rushes-Yards: 21-107
Passing: 486
Comp-Att-Int: 30-46-1
Punts: 2-17.5
Fumbles-Lost: 1-0
Penalties-Yards: 4-45
As impressive as these offensive numbers appear, reverse them and those are the numbers each defense game up as well.
5. Participation is at an all-time high for fans/supporters of Lone Star Gridiron - I have to take a second and give a big THANK YOU - to you! Yes, because you are a fan of Texas high school football and have come to trust LSG as a source for information about "the greatest sport in the greatest state" ™ you are getting more involved.
- We are reaching critical mass on the signups for The Brotherhood of Texas High School Football - our way of honoring anyone who ever played the game in Texas.
- The Fan Feedback show is rocking along with installment #2 coming out this week. You are calling the voicemail line (see it below in RED?) and adding your voice to the chorus! You are sharing the love for your team with the rest of the world and it is a reminder that as separate as we feel at times, there is something about this sport that brings us all together.
- We have more people sending in stories, photos etc to help tell those great #txhsfb stories than ever before. We've been told by contributors its because we are fair and unbiased in our reporting - we don't print anything negative - we played the game - we coached the game - we officiated the game... we live it, we love it!
So please keep contributing and please keep sharing our passion for Texas high school football! Together, we are all what makes this such a great sport!
