Katy avenges last years loss to the Woodlands
KATY - On a beautiful night, Katy High outlasted The Woodlands 14-7 in a defensive battle. The win was payback for Katy as The Woodlands handed the Tigers last years only regular season loss. Friday's game was also the lowest scoring game in this series since the 2006 Tiger's victory (10-7 .)
The most exciting play of the night occurred on the third play from scrimmage. Katy started on offense with two Kyle Porter runs. On 3rd and 5 from their own 37, quarterback Garrett Doiron short-dropped and threw to WR Tony Mullins at the first down marker. Mullins tipped the pass, it bounced off of two Highlander defenders and then landed square back in Mullins hands for a first down. After two Katy offside penalties, five plays later the drive fizzled out.
The Woodlands opened the scoring in the first quarter. Jordan Talford converted a 4th and 1 from Katy’s 35 yard line to keep a Highlanders drive from stalling. Then, quarterback Eric Schmid threw to Mason Wuensch for 6 yards on the ensuing first down. Schmid decided to take off and made it all the way down to Katy’s 8 yard line before he was absolutely crushed by Katy safety, Colin Wilder. Wilder, a University of Houston commit, made bone-crushing hit after hit all night long to highlight the stingy Tiger defense.
The Woodlands took a timeout on first and goal to make sure they didn't waste the scoring opportunity. Talford gained 4 tough yards on 1st and then came right back to the run, exploding through a huge hole for the touchdown and the lead 7-0.
Katy's J. R. Blades took the ensuing kickoff all the way to the 50 setting the Tigers up with excellent field position. The Katy offensive line then smothered The Woodlands defense returning the favor of gigantic holes on the left side as Porter cruised to an easy untouched touchdown to make the score 7 all.
Katy’s next score situation was setup by more solid defense and a bad punt from The Woodlands. On 3rd down and 10, linebacker Paddy Fisher and safety Colin Wilder corralled Schmid once again deep in Highlander territory. The shanked punt set up Katy at the Woodlands 30 yard line. After more missteps by the Katy offense that saw the drive appear to sputter, Porter cranked off a 21 yard run on a delayed draw down to the 12 yard line. A nice play action pass from Doiron to his receiver set Katy up at the 4 needing just 2 yards for a fresh set of downs. They wouldn't need more plays though as Kyle Porter banged his way in for his second touchdown of the night. 14-7 Katy.
Porter looked to have his third TD of the night with 2 minutes left in the 1st half. He drug defenders to the goal line, but just as the official was about to give the touchdown signal the ball popped from his hands and a Highlander defender scooped it up in the back of the end zone.
The Woodlands had two prime opportunities in the second half to even the score. Quarterback Eric Schmid found that navigating the tough Katy defense was easier scrambling than throwing the ball.
After another Kyle Porter fumble the Highlanders had their best drive stall on the Katy 5 yard line. The Woodlands received 30 yards as a gift from the Tigers moving all the way down to the Katy 30 after a late hit and personal foul on Katy's Jovanni Stewart. Talford then had a nice 12 yard run carrying Stewart for the final five yards to the 18. Cory Bethley was all over Schmid throughout the drive but the QB scrambled down to the 5. Returning the gift of penalties, a late-hit by The Woodlands backed them up 15 yards and on the next play, Eric Schmid was charged with intentional grounding while in Hunter Stinson's grasp backing them up another 10 yards. The penalties moved them out of even field goal range forcing The Woodlands to punt the ball away with a couple of minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The Woodlands final chance came with 6:08 remaining in the ball game starting at their own 28. They clawed all the way to the Tigers 41 setting up a huge 4th and 4. With 3:42 on the clock Schmid tossed to Chris Stewart on a sweep right. Jovanni Stewart knifed through to tackle the Highlander ball carrier for a huge tackle for loss and the turnover on downs.
Katy and Porter choked out the clock as Porter got the final Tiger first down with 32 seconds left on a 4th and inches to seal the game.
