Texas High School Football for District 22-6A Opens
PASADENA - Manvel’s 2015 debut in District 22-6A was a repeat of what they did a year ago cruising by Pasadena Dobie 75-7 on Thursday night. The Mavericks after a tough non district schedule including a tough win over Galena Park North Shore 43-40 and an even tougher loss to Spring Westfield 29-26 look to go undefeated in district play once again this year... and they should.
Manvel is a team littered with Division 1 talent. The Maverick's offense has 6 studs already committed to colleges and 4 big time seniors on defense looking to move up a level, including hoss defensive end Hasaun Glasgow headed to University of Houston. With truckloads of talent, they should have no problem with district opponents. While they won't be looking past 22-6A opponents, this Manvel team has set their sight on Katy. It was Katy that knocked Manvel out in the Division II semifinals each of the last two seasons.
The tandem of quarterback D’Eriq King (interview) and tailback D’ Vaughn Pennamon led the blowout as the Mavericks raced out to 48-7 lead at halftime. This Manvel team is so loaded their backup quarterback Kyle Trask (committed to Florida) came in midway during the second quarter and threw for 2 touchdowns before the break. Trask ended up with a 100% completion rate on the night.
King, committed to Texas Christian University and Pennamon pledging to Ole Miss started the scoring early with a nice 10 play drive that surprisingly only took 2 minutes and 54 seconds. The drive was highlighted by a 26 yard jet sweep to the Dobie Longhorn 25 yard line by Keylon Stokes and culminated in 5 yard Sam Smith touchdown out of a power formation from 1st and goal, 6-0 missing the PAT.
After a quick 3 and out by the Longhorns, Manvel was looking to score once again. Coach Kirk Martin’s hurry up offense was just getting started. A one yard gain on first down by Brandon McCarty was followed by a quick 44 yard King to Keylon Stokes strike that pushed them to the Longhorn 16. After King misfired to University of Texas commit Reggie Hemphill-Mapps on first down he showed the crowd why he is one of the most exciting offensive players in the entire state. He took the direct snap and seeing nothing open, King stepped up in the pocket and seemingly was going to sacked by three Dobie defenders but made two great jukes and danced into the end zone 16 yards later.
Not only was the offense clicking on all cylinders but the tough Manvel defense swarmed any Dobie run usually resulting with both defensive ends Hasaun Glasgow and Lance Bryant meeting in the backfield for a myriad of sacks and crushing tackles for loss.
The next King touchdown pass was tossed to Jalen Preston, who is only a sophomore but already touted as one of the top shooting guards in the nation on the basketball court and committed to Oregon. Preston and King hooked up once again one series later for a 13 yard score to make the score 27-0 with 10:35 to go in the second quarter.
Dobie then had their best and only scoring drive of the night. Longhorn QB senior Tyler Giron connected with Breon Simmons for 4 yards on first down and then Junior safety Derick Tucker picked up a personnel foul moving them to the Manvel 47. Dobie freshman running back Kris Morris had a nice 10 yard run on a much needed conversion for third down moving them to the 35. Giron hit receiver Ryan Pair for an 18 yard gain to the 17 and then another pass to Kaelon Woods setting them up for 1st and goal at the five. With the freshman Morris to Giron’s right in the shotgun, Giron found a wide open Sophomore Jeremiah Hernadez for their only score of the night.<
After another Manvel score Kyle Trask came in and showed why Florida offered him a schollie and tossed his 2 touchdowns. This Manvel team is loaded, Deontay Anderson is one of the top safeties in the state, Derrick Tucker is one of the top junior safeties as well. Jordan Carmouche is a formidable linebacker and not to be out done by the skilled guys offensive tackle Austin Meyers will head to Fort Worth with King to TCU. If these guys keep progressing Katy and the rest of the state in 6A will have something to worry about come December and playoff time.
