Texas High School Football Action Across the State
Week Two
Here are some of the most interesting games and results from week 2. If you saw something great (which happens in just about every Texas High School Football game), send us your comments at info@lonestargridiron.com.
Converse Judson 42, Northside Brandeis 14
Judson is on a roll currently ranked #12 and looks to be a power with 2 quality wins over Pflugerville Hendrickson and now Brandeis. BUT....is Brandeis a quality win? Brandeis started the season just outside the Top 20 and now have lost to San Antonio Johnson and Judson (pretty good teams) by a combined total of 78-28.
Allen 56, Viera, Fla. 20
The Eagles continue to roll. That makes 45 consecutive wins and 27 consecutive regular season wins.
Check out the Record Watch Page.
Manvel 43, Galena Park North Shore 40
It was a wild one in Houston. Manvel has gone 1-1 against Houston powers Spring Westfield and Galena Park North Shore. Westfield and North Shore play next week to complete the round robin.
Smithson Valley 35, Northside Brennan 28
Northside Brennan’s streak of 34 consecutive regular season wins ends.
Houston Stratford 17, Alief Elsik 6
Stratford may be even better than we thought. We have them ranked #12 in 5A and they handled #30 in 6A Elsik pretty easily.
Lufkin 52, Tyler Lee 49
Lufkin is now 38-16-1 all-time vs. Tyler Lee. Lee has now lost 2 high scoring close games. They have scored 84 points while giving up 111.
Port Lavaca Calhoun 46, La Vernia 29
Is Calhoun back after going 6-6 last year? They have beat 2 pretty good 4A teams but can they do it when they take on teams more their size/
Texas City 35, La Marque 7
Wow....La Marque is struggling. Texas City owed this year "Battle by the Bay". The Cougars have now lost 2 rival games by a combined score of 7-56.
Abilene Wylie 43, Burnet 23
#17 Abilene Wylie will be a team to watch. They lost a close one to #3 Argyle and then beat #4 Burnet by 20.
Brownwood 59, Graham 53
Brownwood upsets #2 Greham despite 8 touchdown passes by Graham QB Landry Turner.
Laredo United 55, Mission Sharyland 35
Speaking of touchdown passes....Laredo United QB Ignazio Tellez threw 8 of them also.
Liberty Hill 41, Brenham 14
#27 Brenham is now 0-2. They have played tough competition but they lost by combined score of 28-76. Not sure what to think....are they still a good team and just ran into bad lot or where they rated too high?
Stafford 40, Bellville 15
Stafford is on the rise. The Spartans surprised everyone last week with a big win over East Bernard who was a top 10 3A DII team. This week they whipped #12 4A DII Bellville.
Brock 64, Early 7
Brock is still new to the football scene but they are well deserving of their current #3 ranking. They have outscored their first 2 opponents by a combined score of 114-7.
9's & 5's
2 top 10 matchups. Division I vs. Division II -- #5 3A DI Pottsboro beat #5 3A DII Gunter while #9 3A DI Wall beat #9 3A DII Cisco.
Fort Bend Hightower 33, Fort Bend Ridge Point 28
Top 20 Ridge Point falls to 0-2 with 2 close losses to average 6A teams.
IMG Academy, FL. 47, DeSoto 29
Should DeSoto fans be worried about the 0-2 Eagles. They were ranked #1 by just about everyone else in the state.
Odessa Permian 63, Mission Memorial 7
I do not think the valley teams will try to schedule Permian again anytime soon. They beat Memorial and they also beat McAllen last week by a combined score of 123-21.
Corpus Christi Flour Bluff 42, Kilgore 17
Now this is the Flour Bluff we expected after they got upset last week.
Longview 31, Tyler John Tyler 14
Longview has earned their #4 ranking with 2 wins over rival Top 20 teams in Tyler and Lufkin.
