Bowie's Win Streak over Westlake Ends
AUSTIN - Chaparral quarterback Sam Ehlinger connected with wide receiver Andrew Boykin for two touchdowns and with wide receiver Reed Klubnik for another to lead Austin Westlake to a 24-9 victory over rivals Austin Bowie in a District 14-6A showdown Friday night at Burger Stadium.
The Chaparrals’ defense, meanwhile, managed to keep a normally potent Bulldog offense relatively quiet, especially on the ground, holding Bowie to 41 yards rushing.
In the first half, the game was a relatively low-scoring affair as Ehlinger connected with Boykin on a 15-yard pass for the half’s only touchdown on Westlake’s opening drive. Bowie did not get on the board until the second quarter with a 21-yard field goal.
Westlake had the ball at first and goal just before halftime, but a personal foul on the Chaparrals moved the ball back to the 25-yard line. The Chaps were able to add a field goal before halftime to make the score 10-3 following a pass interference penalty against Bowie on third and goal from the Bowie 28-yard line.
After starting the second half on their own 15-yard line, the Bulldogs used a 40-yard pass to Caden Donahue and a 19-yard pass to Cash Cavitt to set up first and goal at the Westlake one yard line. Senior running back Dalynn Threadgill punched the ball in shortly thereafter to give Bowie a chance to tie the game. However, the Bulldogs botched the extra point allowing Westlake to maintain a 10-9 lead.
On the ensuing drive, Ehlinger again connected with Boykin for a 43-yard touchdown to make the score 17-9 in favor of Westlake. Following the touchdown, the Westlake defense held strong once again forcing Bowie to turn the ball over on downs.
The Bulldogs’ defense, in turn, held Westlake to a four-and-out as well on the following drive keeping Bowie within reach early in the fourth quarter. However, penalties proved to be the Bulldogs’ undoing once again as an illegal procedure penalty erased a 33-yard catch by Josh Wainwright that would have set up Bowie with first and goal at the Westlake 9-yard line. Following the penalty, the Westlake defense pushed the Bulldogs backwards forcing them to punt on fourth and 31.
Following the punt, Ehlinger connected with Reed Klubnik for a 33-yard touchdown pass to give Westlake a 24-9. From there, the Westlake defense held stout and shut down the Bowie offense for the rest of the game.
With the win, Westlake snaps a two-year losing streak to Bowie and moves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in district. Up next for the Chaparrals is a game next week against district opponent Austin Akins. The Eagles (4-2 overall, 2-2 district) come into the game following a 28-0 loss to Austin High. Bowie, meanwhile, falls to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in district. The Bulldogs have a bye next week before going on the road to face Akins.
