#1 Canadian Enters Playoffs With 62-2 win over Boys Ranch
CANADIAN, TX – The #1 ranked, defending State Champion Canadian Wildcats hosted the Amarillo Boys Ranch Rough Riders Friday and completed their second consecutive perfect regular season. The Wildcats dominated in their five District 1-2A games just as they did the first five non-conference games. The Wildcats came out and played as if it were a must-win game against a struggling (2-3) (0-4) Rough Rider team.
Canadian demonstrated the ability to score at will, beginning with a QB Tanner Schafer to WR Cameron Copley 72 yard TD pass which was called back due to a penalty on the very first snap from scrimmage. The Wildcats went on to finish the first drive of the game with a 77 yard, 3 play drive capped by a 40 yard rushing TD by RB Chance Cook with only one minute missing from the clock. Boys Ranch was held to a three-and-out on their first offensive possession with DE Cory Chidester notching another tackle-for-loss on the 3rd down. The short punt and return by Chance Cook gave Canadian a short field which set up a 36 yard pass from QB Schafer to WR Manny Ramsey to the 2 yard line and a TD pass to WR Copley on the next play.
Boys Ranch then shocked the Canadian defense, one of the most efficient in Class 2A, on their second offensive drive with a power sweep led by OL James Mewborn, RB Zack Diaz, and WR Elisha Evans to break RB Josiah Temple free for a 73 yard run to the end zone that caught several Wildcats well blocked or over pursuing. Along with several other mistakes and turnovers by the Rough Riders this night, so would this exciting play that displayed Temple’s speed down the sideline of Canadian’s bench also count for nothing due to an illegal procedure penalty.
The Wildcats limited their scoring to only the first half after the quick-to-line-up-fast-snapping offense finished the 1st quarter with 41 points and the 2nd quarter with 21. QB Tanner Schafer went 13-for-14 passing, 0 INT, and 6 TDs for 270 yards. Those Schafer TD passes included two more receptions WR Copley (6 for 137 yards, 3 TDs) for 12 and 59 yards, two by WR Sawyer Cook (5 for 86 yards, 2 TDs) for 2 and 48 yards, and a 10 yarder snagged by Ryan Royse in the SW edge of the end zone.
Running back, Chance Cook (4 carries for 47 yards) added two more TDs after the first 40 yard run, one from 2 yards out and an INT on defense which he returned for 33 yards. Kicker Benigno Heredia was 8-for-9 of PATs on the night, also consistently placing kickoffs deep in the end zone.
Starting the 3rd quarter, Boys Ranch proceeded to take the kickoff toward the south end zone on a 12 play, 75 yard drive with one pass play going for 39 yards from QB Brad Jackson to WR Abel Morales before finally being held at the 2 yard line by Canadian defensive reserves. The next play, however, Canadian’s backup QB Corbin Douthitt watched the snap go by him out of the end zone due to a mixed signal with the Center, giving The Rough Riders 2 points for the safety, ending all scoring at 62-2.
This win brings Canadian’s consecutive win streak number to 25, a stat that certainly has other Class 2ADI teams scheming to erase beginning next Thursday night at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo. The Wildcats will face the 4th seed from District 2-2A, Hale Center, for the first round Bi-District Title.
