Manvel Dominant in Regional Win
NRG- Like many of their foes this year the Houston Strake Jesuit Crusaders saw what a blitzkrieg of a scoring outburst the Manvel Mavericks can unleash. The Mavericks scored 70 points for the 6th time this season beating Jesuit 75-14 in the final game of a triple-header on Friday night.
Now, Manvel will face Katy for the third straight year in the 4th round of the 6A Division II playoffs. Their previous two games against the Tigers weren't competitive (2013: 56-14, 2014: 45-17). Coach Kirk Martin said this about the looming throw down, “It’s always been in the back of our mind. They’ve whipped us two years in a row and knocked us out of the 4th round, knocked us out of a chance at going all they way. It's been on our mind for a long time.” Maybe the third time will be a charm for the Mavericks.
Manvel started the scoring quickly. A two play scoring drive with senior tailback D’ Vaughn Pennamon taking it 45 yards gave them a fast 7-0 lead Pennamon has rushed for over 500 yards the past two games combined.
Hunter Hagdorn then scored the first of three touchdowns on a 23 yard pass from D’Eriq King to extend the lead 14-0. On their next scoring drive Pennamon scored again set up by a big King to Keylon Stokes 46 yard gainer. The score was 21-0 Manvel still in the first quarter.
King said this about Katy a week from now, “I feel like we’ve been waiting for this game since we lost last year. Its been on our minds ever since then. So we are gonna go out there and compete next week. We haven't played a really good game versus them yet. Our senior class, we played against them our sophomores years and I feel this is our year to beat them.”
Katy coach Gary Joseph said this about King and Manvel earlier in the day, “Very good, very well coached football team, talented as anyone in the state, we understand that and we know that. We are gonna have to play a clean ball game. They are very explosive and have been beating everybody pretty bad. We are gonna have to come out and prepare and see if we can slow them down a little.”
Strake Jesuit got on the board in the second quarter when quarterback Zach Zubia found 6-3, 225 pound Andrew Eichelberger on a slant from 26 yards out. The score cut the Manvel lead to 21-7.
King answered back with a 41 yard TD pass to UT commit Reggie Hemphill-Mapps to stretch the lead 28-7. Jesuit then had a 2 play scoring drive of their own. Tailback Josh Reece scored the final Crusader touchdown on a 6 yard run. A play before, Zubia threw a lateral pass to Christian Charbonnet who then hit Boston College signee Christian McStravick for 48 yards down to the Maverick 6 yard line.
The Mavericks then scored 54 straight points. Safety Derrick Tucker and cornerback Depriest Taylor both had defensive scores and Pennamon had another huge 92 yard touchdown run.
The conversation continued to be all about Katy as Pennamon added this about the Tigers, “We just gonna come out, be physical and have a great week of practices and be ready on Friday.” “You know, they always say third times a charm and that could be our charm too.”
Hunter Hagdorn the offensive MVP also discussed the Katy matchup, “We have a bad taste in our mouth about that game last year. They sent us home early, we are just gonna keep doing what we are doing and we are on a roll right now. I think we are peaking at the right moment. So we just play our game and I don't think anyone out here can play with us.”
Coach Martin ended with this about the matchup everybody has waited to see, “You just gotta play the game. You gotta line up and play and see where the chips fall, they are really, really, really, really good. Very physical, hard-nosed, tough team and they have a whole lot of talent. They got as much talent as anybody in the country. We are gonna have to slow it down a little bit and extend some drives offensively, we haven't had any success the last two years, we will give it another shot.”
In one week they will definitely give it another shot.
