Manvel Bounces Back with Big Win
Alvin- As the second season (playoffs) starts around the state this weekend, half the teams will see their's come to an end. The Channelview Falcons who have not made the playoffs since 1993 rode the arm and legs of super star quarterback Jalen Hurts into the postseason against the mighty Manvel Mavericks. Channelview’s season however, came to an end at Alvin Memorial stadium, 71-21.
D’ Eriq King and his Mavericks continue on in their journey with an impressive offensive outburst. Manvel bounced back in grand fashion after a heartbreaking district championship loss last week to Pearland. In this second season, King and the Mavs are looking for much more than a district trophy.
Tonight’s game was effectively over very early. Manvel and Coach Kirk Martin’s hurry-up offense scored quickly and often amassing 40 points and 264 yards in the first half.
King found Sean Dykes, Bay City great Hart Lee Dykes’ nephew, for his first score of the night from 16 yards out to take a 7-0 lead..
Then after Hurts was intercepted by super star junior safety Derrick Tucker at the Manvel 33, King found, Texas commit, Reggie Hemphill-Mapps down the right sideline as he eased past the defensive back and hauled in a 37 yard touchdown pass of his own. Manvel jumped to a 14-0 lead.
The Manvel defense behind seniors Hasaun Glasgow (UH commit), Jordan Carmouche (committed to Arkansas on Halloween) and Deontay Anderson (one of the top senior safeties in the nation) forced a Channelview punt. (Ole Miss pledge) The following drive saw King find D’ Vaughn Pennamon (Ole Miss pledge) on first and goal at the 4 on the right flank to go up 21-0. With the touchdown King surpassed Colt McCoy on the all time Texas TD passing list with 116 career touchdowns.
Pennamon scored again after another Tucker interception of Hurts. Manvel went for two and could not convert when King was forced from the pocket and sacked. The rout was getting worse at 27-0.
Junior running back Sam Smith scored next from 4 yards out to ramp up the score to 34-0 in the second quarter. That’s when the play of the night happened. Jalen Hurts seemingly had one of his best gainers of the night finding Anthony Means who made it all the way to the Maverick 5 yard line only to have Tucker strip the ball from him and Deontay Anderson scoop it up. Anderson sprinted all the way down the left sideline for a 95 yard fumble return for a touchdown and a 40-0 score. That's the kind of night it was for the Channelview Falcons.
With the first play from scrimmage in the second half D’ Eriq King passed Aggie QB Kyler Murray on the all-time Texas TD passing with 117. He hit Keylon Stokes and he made a lot of people miss on his way to a 66 yard touchdown reception. 47-0, Manvel.
His fifth and final touchdown of the night came to Dykes again, this time for 50 yard. Kyle Trask replaced King with 4:20 left in the third. Trask is the only second string quarterback in the nation committed to an SEC school. University of Florida is where he will matriculate. Is Manvel loaded or what?
Hurts scored one touchdown on the night with a 1 yard feet first jump. Junior running back Demontre Moore added 2 touchdowns and 136 yards for the Falcons. Hurts was 20-36 for 175 yards, 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions and 123 yards rushing against the fastest defense he has seen all year.
It was the fourth time this year that Manvel scored more than 70 points, twice eclipsing the 60 mark too. Manvel will face undefeated Clear Creek (11-0) with the rumored stadium to be Pasadena Memorial next weekend.
Jalen Hurts said this about the night, “Offensively we didn't go out like we wanted to, had some turnovers early in the game, missed some balls, turned the ball over, we didn't play like we knew we could play. The number one offense in Houston, we could not get it done, that's upsetting.”
With his season coming to what many considered and early end, Hurts talked about being coached by his father Averion Hurts, “It's been a great journey, he’s been there the whole time, its just a great experience to go through with your dad coaching you. With your dad coaching you, you can say you've been coached."
