Rockets' Red Glare in Texas High School Football
San Antonio Heroes Stadium- The Converse Judson Rockets used an aggressive, opportunistic defense behind a three-pronged rushing attack to run away from the Roosevelt Roughriders on Thursday night, 66-20. Judson who made it to the Division 1 semifinals game last year against Galena Park North Shore looks to be a major player within the state this year after knocking off #1 Lake Travis opening weekend. Judson is #7 in our rankings and now 3-0 on this young season. They have a legitimate claim to #1 in the San Antonio area as Cibolo Steele fell to Lake Travis this past weekend.
Judson scored with 5 seconds taken off the game clock. After a Shane King kickoff, Roughrider Quarterback Bryson Carroll looked to his right, fired a pass that was beautifully read by Tyriq Adair as he stepped in front of the defender and raced in the end zone for a 15 yard score, 7-0 Rockets.
Disaster occurred again on the ensuing kick for Roosevelt when Leroy Giles fumbled the ball and Rocket Jeremiah Fries recovered. Three plays later the Rockets led 14-0 - just 43 seconds into the game. Stud sophomore Running back Sincere McCormick had the honors from 10 yards out.
The Roughriders fought back. Bryson Carroll showed why he’s committed to University of New Mexico. He found big good looking 6-6, 235 pound tight end Xander Yarberough wide open for a 28 yard touchdown, 14-7.
Judson’s offense then took over. Talented junior signal caller Julon Williams lead the way with his three talented runners probing the Roughrider defense. A seven play 75 yard drive ended with Williams taking it in from 17 yards out. The score was 21-7 with 11:53 in the 2nd quarter.
Williams then combined feet and arm when he scrambled right and found Kevin Luster all alone for a 43 yard score, 28-7. Junior Jay Miller, one of Judson’s trio of runners along with senior Mi’kel Jackson, plunged in from 3 yards out to make it, 35-7.
If scoring when the game had just began was not enough, Judson scored as the half came to a close. Linebacker Rashad Wisdom stole the ball from Leroy Giles’ hands and returned it for a 28 yard score with 1:14 left, 42-14.
Julon, who is committed to UTSA, took the second half off and let backup junior Royal Davis handle quarterback duties. Davis responded with two touchdowns passes including a long 96 yarder to McCormick. By the time the final buzzer went off, the Rockets had the win 66-20.
