Missouri City Ken Hall Stadium- Fort Bend Ridge Point Panthers keep rolling along in District 20-6A. The Panthers along with Head Coach Brett Sniffin are proving to be quick learners in 6A football. Their first season in Texas’s highest classification has produced a 8-0 record. A year after falling to the Cedar Park Timberwolves in the 5A semifinal game they look for much more in 2016.
Behind a super stout defense and an opportunistic offense they buried the Fort Bend Austin Bulldogs 56-0 on Saturday night. The Panthers have two big games to clinch the district crown next week against the Fort Bend Bush Broncos and the week following with the Fort Bend Hightower Hurricanes.
That stout defense got on the board first. Junior Linebacker Jarrett Preston intercepted Austin Quarterback Chris Rivers on their 2nd possession of the game and returned it 43 yards down the left sideline to open up the scoring 7-0. Another interception, this time by middle linebacker Matt DeLeon set up the Panthers next touchdown. Sophomore Mason McBride, filling in for star tailback B. J. Rainford (ACL injury) raced in from 14 yards out making it 14-0.
Quarterback Aaron Allen then got in on the scoring with a 23 yard crossing route to Terry Petry who tight roped it down the left sideline for a 23 yard score and a 21-0 lead. The defense then forced a 3 and out. After a great Mustapha Muhammad catch of 32 yards, Allen hit Petry again, this time for 13 yards down to the 1. Mason McBride (11 carries 63 yards) scored on the next play extending the lead to 28-0.
Mustapha Muhammad (5-101, 2 TDs) was about to exhibit why he is one of the most recruited juniors in the nation. Allen found him on another crossing/drag route as he turned to the sideline. The 6-5, 230 pounder stiff armed his defender out of bounds and to the ground. Then he showed some elusiveness for his size and scored on a 43 yard catch and run with 1: 50 left in the half. The score was 35-0 Panthers going in for the break.
Muhammad was back at it in the early 3rd. This time he gobbled up a 6 yard pass from Allen making it 42-0. Coach Sniffin emptied the bench for much of the second half. Moses Adeyeye fresh off the junior varsity this week for the Rainford injury had 13 runs and broke the century mark (115 yards) in his first varsity game. He scored from 5 and 34 yards out to finish Panther scoring for the game.
If the Panthers win out they will probably face Katy Morton Ranch in the first round of the playoffs. Ridge Point is ranked #16 and should continue to rise. Austin falls to 2-6, 1-4 district and will face Fort Bend Dulles next week.
