Austin Bowie Cruises to District Title with Rout of San Marcos
In the de facto District 14-6A championship game at Toyota Rattler Stadium Friday night, the Austin Bowie Bulldogs trounced the San Marcos Rattlers 59-7. The Bulldogs’ offense gashed the Rattlers’ defense with 383 yards rushing and 567 yards of total offense. Senior running back Dalynn Threadgill led the team 246 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The district title is Bowie’s first since 2010.
Both teams entered the game at 4-0 in district play but had arrived there via very different paths. Bowiw entered the game at 8-1 overall. The Bulldogs’ lone loss came early in the season against Austin Westlake. San Marcos, on the other hand, struggled early starting the season 1-3. After the rough start, however, San Marcos had rattled off five-straight wins to set up the district showdown with Bowie.
Early in the game, both teams struggled to find their rhythm offensively. After both squads traded three-and-out possessions to start the game, Bowie junior kicker Nick Medina opened the scoring with a 36-yard field goal. The offensive struggles then continued for both sides until Threadgill found the end zone for the first time early in the second quarter.
After the Bulldogs’ defense forced the Rattlers to punt on the ensuing drive, Threadgill found the end zone again to increase Bowie’s lead to 17-0. Bowie senior quarterback Wade Smith then connected with sophomore wide receiver Elijah Higgins on a four-yard touchdown pass just before halftime.
In the second half, Bowie continued to dominate both sides of the ball. The Bulldogs’ defense continued to stymie the Rattlers’ offense allowing only 67 total yards in the second half. Offensively, the Bulldogs continued to gouge the Rattlers on the ground and through the air. Senior wide receiver Aizayah Santiago scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter to put Bowie up 31-0.
Junior quarterback Matthew Wheeler scored on a seven-yard keeper, and sophomore running back Kyle Carter also scored touchdowns on runs of 14 and 44 yards respectively. Senior running back Gianni Vice-Holguin capped off the Bowie scoring with a 34-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. San Marcos’s lone touchdown came on their last drive when junior running back Julian Perez scored a three-yard run.
With the win, Bowie improves to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in district. This is also the Bulldogs’ fourth nine-win season in their history. Next week, the Bulldogs will host the Pflugerville Hendrickson Hawks (3-6 overall, 2-4 district) in the bi-district round of the UIL 6A Division I playoffs. The game will be at Burger Stadium on Friday, November 11, at 7:30pm.
San Marcos, meanwhile, falls to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in district. The Rattlers will host the Round Rock Stony Point Tigers (3-7 overall, 2-4 district) in the bi-district round of the UIL 6A Division II playoffs. The date and time are to be determined.
