Canadian Over Powers Roosevelt 54-0, Faces Eastland in Area Round
The defending State Champion Canadian Wildcats had little trouble with Lubbock Roosevelt in the opening Bi-District round of the playoffs Thursday at Canyon’s Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
Roosevelt’s offense became victims of the Wildcat’s third shutout in the last four games. The Eagles offense, led by QB J.D. Rojas, were unable to produce a 1 st down in the nine possessions they had in the first half. Two of those drives were cut short with interceptions by Canadian DB Mathew Lynch.
Just as the Wildcat defense came out firing on all cylinders, so did the fast paced NASCAR offense that Canadian has perfected over the last eight seasons, a weapon that has been used to secure four State Championships. QB Corbin Douthitt was already finished for the night by the middle of the 2nd quarter, going 12-for- 14 and 214 yards, scoring on 6-of- 7 offensive drives with 7:34 still left in the 2 nd period. The wave of points began with WR Cameron Copley receiving an 8 yard TD pass, a 1 yard TD run by RB Chris Jones, a 1 yard TD run by RB Cade Throgmorton, a 32 yard TD run by RB Alexis Flores, a 64 yard TD pass reception by WR Cameron Copley, and a 25 yard TD pass to WR Matthew Lynch.
The Eagles were able to collect turnovers from the Wildcats twice, once on a fumble by RB Holton Hufstedler after receiving a Douthitt pass. After driving Canadian’s offense 61 yards to the Roosevelt 4 yard line, backup QB Casen Cavalier was picked off in the end zone by Eagle DB Stephen Calcote, running it back to the Eagle 10.
The scoring tsunami by Canadian ended with 1:17 left in the 3 rd quarter with Cavalier leading the offense on a 52 yard drive capped off by a 3 yard TD run by RB Caleb Martinez and a 63 yard drive with Cavalier tossing a 39 yard TD pass to RB Alexis Flores.
Canadian will move on to the Area Championship round to face Eastland at Lion Stadium in Vernon on Friday, November 18 th , at 7:00 P.M.
Eastland is hot coming off their own Bi-District win versus Ballinger, 56-6. Eastland will be a legitimate test to the proficient Wildcat defense, having averaged 54.3 points in the 8 wins of their current 8-3 season. The Mavericks have racked up those points with offensive weapons like QB Mason Wright, a mobile QB that plays the option well along with hard running RB Chris Martinez. Always ready to salvage a drive or make a difference in a close game is kicker Jr. Fullen, who has put it through the uprights from 50 yards this season.
