11-0 Ricebirds Set to go deep in Playoffs
El Campo- The El Campo Ricebird ground game churned out 345 yards and their tough defense limited the Houston Washington Golden Eagle offense to a yard over the century mark (101) in a 56-6 win to kick off the 2016 Class 4A DI playoffs.
Coach Wayne Condra and his Ricebirds slowly got out of the gates before turning on the gas in the second quarter with a four touchdown barrage. Deaderick Holloway and Nery Enriquez proved to be too fast and too hard to tackle for the Eagles. Condra tested the Eagles defense with four straight Holloway runs to start the game. He gained 36 on his first carry, 9 yards, 16 and then scored from first in goal at the four yard line - 65 yards all for Holloway and that was the type of night for the Ricebirds, they did what they wanted and took the 7-0 lead.
Quarterback Brock Brandl hardly had to throw the ball. He was highly accurate going 4-4 for 68 yards and 2 touchdowns. His first throw was a 35 yard strike to a wide open Wesley Arrambide, 14-0.
The Eagles got on the board early in the 2nd quarter after Desmond Burnside returned an Enriquez fumble 83 yards to the El Campo 6. Two plays later after a Washington offside Tre’ Vionne Honora barreled in from 6 yards off the right side for the Eagles only score, PAT missed, 14-6 El Campo still.
Enriquez got the first of his three touchdowns (all in 2nd quarter) with a 1 yard plunge of his own to push the lead to 21-6. Then Brandl found him wide open on a little waggle route on the left side for a 28-6 lead. Then the Ricebirds blocked an Eagle punt and Zarian Baylor came up with the ball in the end zone, 35-6. Kyle Mamerow recovered an Eagle fumble at the 17 yard line with under a minute and a half to play in the half. Enriquez got his final touchdown with 17 seconds left in the half, 42-6.
Jerric Chapman added the final two scores for the Ricebirds, 2 and 10 yard runs.
Washington falls to 5-6 on the year. The Ricebirds will face the winner of Henderson versus Little Cypress-Mauriceville.
