Klein Memorial- The combination of Brandon Blair and C. J. Ward spurred the Klein Oak Panthers past The Aldine Davis Falcons, 34-21 on Saturday. Blair did the heavy lifting with each of his 3 touchdowns coming in the second half. The Panthers were down 14-6 at half. Their offense came to life in the 3rd quarter.
Neither team could muster a score in the 1st quarter. Then Davis scored touchdowns and the Panthers kick field goals. Coach Dave Smith knew his Panthers had to score touchdowns to win this game. They had to wait until his second half speech to capitalize for him.
Blair said Coach Smith energized them with this at the half, “Ya’ll got to fight!!! Ya’ll are out there, ya’ll are tippy toeing, ya’ll are moving slow, ya’ll aren’t coming off the ball. Go out there and fight and give it everything ya’ll got, and that’s what we did!”
Davis Quarterback Kameron Pryor had a hand in each of the 3 Falcon scores. Early in the 2nd quarter he had a 17 yard strike to sophomore De’Corie King to take a 7-0 lead. Trent Sisco got the Panthers on the board with a 41 yard field goal, 7-3.
Pryor got the Falcons going later in the quarter. He had a nice 13 yard pass to Justin Wheatfall down to the Panthers 26. Then he took it in by himself from there, 14-3. Pryor finished 16-of-33 for 185 yard and one touchdown with an interception.
Sisco added a 26 yard field goal with 26 seconds before the half, 14-6.
It was time for Blair, Ward and the Panther offense to step up in the final half. 21 unanswered points sunk the Falcons. Quarterback Ward, who was spelled by Blair as a wildcat QB, established a connection with senior Wide Receiver Micah Small. Ward hit Small for a 14 yarder down to the 26. Blair then took over at quarterback in the red zone. QB Keeper after QB Keeper set them up for their first touchdown. Blair supplied it from 2 yards out. The 2 point conversion went incomplete 14-12.
The KO defense then stepped up and stepped up again. Nathan Smith and Odessa Thurman snowed over Wheatfall at the Falcon 7 yard line for a 7 yard loss. A 29 yard punt to the 36 had the Panthers ready to take the lead. Ward found Small from 31 yards out and the Panthers were on top, 19-4. It sure was a pretty pass. Small had 4 reception for 88 yards and that touchdown.
Junior Linebacker Hanin Rakrouki had the defensive play of the game when he returned a Pryor kick to the 18 yard line. A few plays later Blair took it in from 12 yards out. CJ Ward got the 2-point conversion, 27-14. 7:06 remaining.
Pryor added a 14 yard TD pass to Kevin Walker with 2 and a half minutes left but it was for not. Their onsides kick sailed out of bounds. Brandon Blair added the exclamation point with a 44 yard gallop and a bi-district win.
Klein Oak had 394 yards total and 23 first downs. Davis had 297 total yards.
Klein Oak moves to 7-3 (They had a game called because of weather against Humble Atascocita) and will face 8-3 Round Rock on Saturday 1 pm at Bryan’s Merrill Green stadium. Davis falls to 5-6.
