NRG stadium- In the first of 4 games that pits Houston vs Austin area schools. The Spring Westfield Mustangs drew first blood and held Round Rock Stony Point Tigers scoreless behind an outstanding effort from their defensive line, 24-0.
The Westfield defense really tightened up in the second half limiting the Tigers to 73 total yards. The Mustangs led by giant junior tackle Keondre Coburn. He and his cohorts sacked the Tigers rotating two quarterbacks 6 times.
Could these Spring Westfield Mustangs mirror or mimic last years Division 1 Champions the Galena Park North Shores Mustangs and advance to a title??? Everyone in the program hopes and prays for it. Last year, North Shore lost 3 tough games in the early part of the year and then went on their title run. This season, Westfield lost their first 3 games as well to tough opponents.
- Houston Lamar 38-28
- Euless Trinity 28-27
- Galena Park North Shore 36-16
Westfield jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back.
Senior Darlin Mendoza kicked a 31 yard field goal to get the Mustangs in the score column on their first drive of the game, 3-0. Stony Point alternated quarterbacks between junior Jack Driskill and senior Dashun Horne. They both found some early success driving the Tigers down the field. Neither could drum up any points for Stony Point. Stymied out of scoring position by sacks or penalties.
Super swift junior QB Blair Benton found fellow classmate Ali Walter for a nice 60 yard pass play to set up the next Mustang score. Then sophomore Rayshawn James carried it in from 14 yards out on the next play, 10-0. The drive took only 3 plays.
Westfield’s next touchdown came after a Driskill fumble that Azuka Mgbemena recovered. They went with their goal line package and Jimmy Bruner banged his way in, 17-0.
The lone score in the second half came after a big 51 yard punt return by Shaun Lewis down to the Stony Point 2 yard line. Daniel Young jumped over the end zone, 24-0
Westfield’s attack was pretty even, 170 rush yards to 160 passing. The Mustangs limited Stony Point to 195 total yards.
Westfield will face the winner of Garland Lakeview Centennial and Beaumont West Brook which is tonight in Palestine.
Will their be the same payoff for Westfield in scheduling a grueling non district slate??? Coach Matt Meekins and his charges believe so.
Tonight the 10-1 Klein Collins Tigers face undefeated and 11-0 Round Rock Cedar Ridge at Bryan’s Merrill Green stadium. Tomorrow we have a doubleheader at the same site, Klein Oak vs. Round Rock & then Spring vs. Austin Bowie.
