West Orange-Stark Too Much For Geronimo Navarro
The Mustangs from West Orange-Stark (WOS) beat the Panthers from Geronimo Navarro in the Class 4A Division II Semifinals 49-7. They used a strong defense, team speed and a great passing game to put up a 28 point second quarter to earn the victory.
WOS controlled the first quarter and led 7-0 at the end. Navarro started the quarter off but had a pass intercepted by Mustang defensive back Jarron Morris who returned it 40 yards to the Navarro 36 yard line. WOS quarterback Jack Dallas had a perfect pass dropped in the end zone on the Mustang first play. After that, they advanced the ball inside the Panther 10 yard but were stopped on a 4th & Goal at the 6. Navarro took over and they were stopped on a 4th down play of their own at their 41 yard line. Dallas was then able to get going when he hit receiver Keion Hancock on a short pass that was turned into a 24 yard score. With 2:34 left in the first quarter, WOS led 7-0. Navarro went another 3 and out and the quarter ended with WOS driving.
The Mustangs extended their lead early in the 2nd quarter when Dallas scored on a 6 yard run to make it 14-0 with 11:34 left. Navarro again went 3 and out and the Mustangs scored quickly when Kentavious Miller returned the punt 66 yards for a touchdown. WOS now led 21-0 with 10:23 remaining until half. Navarro could not get anything going again and the Mustangs made them pay when Dallas hit Morris again for a score. This time from 46 yards out to make the score 28-0. Dallas hit Hancock with 4:28 left for a 23 yard pass to make it 35-0. The Mustangs had 2 touchdowns called back in the last part of the quarter. One interception and one punt return where Miller broke 5 tackles on his way to the end zone. WOS ended the quarter with 204 total yards with 152 passing. Navarro was held to 32 total yards with -2 passing yards.
Navarro showed a little spark in the 3rd quarter going 75 yards to score when receiver Tanner Law caught a pass from quarterback Will Eveld to make the score 35-7. The Panthers then recovered an onside kick but they were unable to convert when they turned it over on downs inside the Mustang 20 yard line. WOS punted and the quarter ended with the Panthers driving.
The Mustangs had another touchdown brought back early in the 4th when a penalty cancelled a 35 yard interception return by defensive back Malick Phillips. WOS did get on the board in the 4th when Miller picked off a pass and went 70 yards for the score. The Mustangs now led 42-7 with 9:02 remaining. West Orange-Stark got a late touchdown to bring us to the final score of 49-7.
West Orange-Stark will be making their 7th trip to the state championship including their 3rd consecutive. They will be playing Sweetwater.
