Coaching Carousel Creates Web of History

Texas high school football coaching carousel

Edna, Corpus Christi Carroll & Odem Move Coaches

It has been called the coaching carousel, the moving van report and the off-season shuffle. One thing you can count on when the basketballs and baseballs come out is coaching moves.  We thought it would be interesting to show you just how related and intertwined the coaching paths become.  Keep in mind that these recent moves are just a tiny fraction of what happens every single off-season. It is a magical dance similar to the great migration that takes place every year following the rains in Africa. It is as fascinating to watch as any documentary.

Huey Chancellor

Edna, Corpus Christi Carroll and Odem all have new coaches that show just how the coaching carousel works. It all started in Edna when Huey Chancellor retired. He was the Head Coach for the Cowboys for the past 3 years going 23-16. His all-time coaching record is 157-120-0 which ties him for 227th place all-time. He was also a Head Coach at Palacios 1993-1994 (2-18), Bellville 1995-2008 (115-49-0), Longview Pine Tree 2009-2010 (2-18-0) and Rockport-Fulton 2011-2013 (15-19).

Jerry Long

Corpus Christi Carroll Head Coach Jerry Long then left the Tigers after 1 season to take over at Edna. Coach Long went 5-6 during his only season there. He has an all-time coaching record of 108-39-0 which ties him for 414th place all-time. He was also a Head Coach at Woodsboro 2005 (4-6) and East Bernard 2006-2015 (99-27-0)). Before taking over as Head Coach, he was the offensive coordinator at Gregory-Portland and Orange Grove. He was also an assistant at Refugio. His dad is Don Long who was the Head Coach at Orange Grove from 1998-2002.

AJ Martinez

Odem's A.J. Martinez then left the Owls and took his high flying offense to Corpus Christi Carroll. He led the Owls for the past 6 years to a 53-21 record. Before that he was the defensive coordinator at Sinton.

Armando Huerta

Finally, this portion of carousel ride ends as Odem hired defensive coordinator Armando Huerta to be their new Head Coach. Huerta was the defensive coordinator with the Owls since 2014. Before that he was the Co-defensive coordinator at Refugio. In 2011, he was there when the Bobcats won a state championship. This will be his first Head Coaching job. He is a Odem graduate.

If you can't keep that all straight, you're not alone.  And this is just a tiny sampling of a small percentage of this years moves.  Don't worry though... we'll be here to keep it all straight!
