Cubs Hope to Create 4A Success
The Brownfield Cubs hired Jeff Smith as their new Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. The Cubs are coming off a 1-9 season after moving up to Class 4A in the last realignment. 2016 marked the 5th season playing up at 4A and the first since 1983. Brownfield's combined record at Class 4A is 7 wins and 42 losses. By contrast, the Cubs were 16-7 in their last two seasons playing Class 3A ball.
Smith replaced Bryan Welps who had been with the team for the previous six seasons. Welps compiled a record of 29-36-1 during his tenure there. Prior to that, Welps led Amarillo River Road (6 years 23-39-0.)
The 44-year-old Smith brings 20 years coaching experience. Although Jeff Smith has two decades of experience this will be his first time as an AD. Before joining Brownfield he was the Offensive Coordinator at Stinnett West Texas.
