Salinas Will follow Legend at Weslaco
Weslaco High approved Micheal Salinas as the next Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach for the Panthers. He had been with the Edinburg Vela Sabercats since the school was started in 2012 and guided the team to a record of 36-20 during those four seasons.
Prior to the head coaching role at Vela, Salinas was the receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Hardin-Simmons University, the Defensive Coordinator at both Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Kingsville as well as the Defensive Coordinator at West Texas A&M. He also has other high school experience with stints at Harlingen South, Robstown and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff.
As a teenager, Coach Salinas played quarterback at Edinburg High in the mid-90's before continuing his playing career at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Coach Salinas has Texas-sized boots to fill as he comes in to replace long-time Weslaco coach, Tony Villarreal. Villarreal had held head coaching positions all over The Valley during the last 27 years including the last 12 at Weslaco (90-48-0.) During that time, the Panthers earned four district titles and only one losing season (2009.)
Tony Villarreal's all-time record is 197-107-4 which makes him among the winningest coaches in the history of Texas high school football.
Coach Salinas knows what is expected by the Weslaco program and it ready to add his name to previous Weslaco success stories.
