Panthers Summer Workouts Begin
The Conroe Caney Creek football team is kicking off the summer with workouts. But, the Panthers are not simply doing only football drills. They are working out with athletes from other sports as well as their gridiron teammates. The Panther Speed & Power Camp is a program designed for players to become better overall athletes. With an emphasis on being better athletes, expectations are beginning to get higher for a team that hasn't managed a winning season for the past ten years.
“We want all sports to be involved. I want my football players to not just be football players. I want them to go play basketball and run track, I want them to be multifaceted,” Head Coach Steve Svendsen said.
“If you have success in other sports, success breeds success. Then everybody understands how to win, and what it takes to win,” he added.
The workouts are Monday through Thursday from 7am to 9am. The coaches emphasize to the players the benefits of working together with their teammates and motivating each other in the drills.
“I'm sacrificing my morning routines to be here. I want to step up my game and be a better player for my teammates,” Cornerback Jesus Hernandez said.
On Mondays and Wednesdays the players begin their morning with leg workouts and end the second hour with agility stations such as sleds, parachutes, and ladders. Tuesdays and Thursdays are upper-body workouts and afterwards they go run the track. Having a full two hour workout takes a lot of commitment and sacrifice for these young players.
Christian Parra (WR) said, “It takes commitment to be here. It's not easy, but being successful out in the field is never going to be easy.”
Offensive Tackle Pablo Granados commented, “Getting some reps in with the guys has really helped me understand what it takes to defend the colors of our school.”
Not only will their bodies get physically stronger but their minds will be more competitive because of the learning they get from the football program itself.
“If you want to be a great athlete, you got to invest into being good. We tell our kids in our off-season program that there is a commitment factor as far as you investing into the process,” Svendsen said.
The involvement of athletes across multiple sports not only allows them to interact with and see how speed and power apply across sports, but also helps reinforce the benefit of participation in more than just football.
