Bushland @ Canadian Season Opener Provides Hurricane Relief for Past Rival
Very rarely does even Texas High School Football surpass expectations. However, it appears that the stars have aligned to do just that at Canadian’s Wildcat Stadium Friday night for their season opener with the Bushland Falcons. The best place to start is to announce that the hosting Canadian fans, faculty, and parents, along with informed Bushland fans making the road trip will be prepared to make cash donations and gather supplies for Hurricane Harvey victims specifically in the Refugio area.
Many fans that follow Lone Star Gridiron will remember the 2015 State Championship match between the Canadian Wildcats and the Refugio Bobcats at NRG Stadium in Houston. Two storied programs in Class 2A DI met in what is now sadly another outstanding venue currently used at this time as shelter for Harvey victims.
When the word got out that Refugio received extensive damage by the hurricane, CHS English teacher, Whitney Jones, quickly organized a “pass the bucket” event for Friday’s home game with Bushland and began tweeting the information. Soon after, other social media accounts, including Bushland ISD and coaches, posted on different platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
Refugio Head Coach Jason Herring has had discussions with Jones about some of the needs that Refugio ISD will have when the work to rebuild begins. Although Canadian has moved up to Class 3A DII, they have not forgotten meeting Refugio in Class 2A for the 2015 State Title.
Another interesting addition to Friday night’s game has been the anticipation of being broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest as one of ten originally scheduled “look-in” games. Two other high school games will be broadcast from kickoff-to- buzzer, one of which will be teams which Canadian has faced in the playoffs in years gone by, Idalou vs. Shallowater. FSSW will break from those games to view highlights and give updates on the “look-in” games such as the game in Canadian Friday night. Then of course, there is the on-the- field competition that might have something to do with the interest Fox Sports has to “look-in”.
Last season’s opener between Canadian at Bushland provided a great deal of drama. Canadian entered the contest with a 31-0 win streak, tying them with Wheeler for the Panhandle win streak record. Bushland was loaded with one of their best teams in years and ready to right the wrong of having a 0-5 record with the Wildcats. Along with a two-hour rain delay, the back-and- forth game saw the Falcons hold off the Wildcats 38-35 (see story) and become the spoiler of Canadian's attempt to break the Panhandle win streak record, along with redeeming themselves of their 5 previous losses to Canadian.
The dynamics of this game look superb on paper! Let’s hope for an exciting, injury free game.
