A One-Sided Affair
Thursday night marked the official opening of Pflugerville ISD’s brand new stadium, the Pfield. After a pregame ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Pflugerville Panthers faced off against their long-time rivals, the Austin Bowie Bulldogs. Last season, the Bulldogs went 11-2 and won the District 14-6A title. Bowie advanced to the third round of the UIL 6A Division 1 playoffs where they lost to eventual state runner-up The Woodlands. The Panthers, meanwhile, went 3-7 last year. The Panthers missed the playoffs losing on tiebreakers.
From the beginning, the Bulldogs dominated the game, especially on the defensive side. On the first three Pflugerville drives, junior defensive back Terrance Durst recorded two interceptions, and senior defensive back Tony Miller blocked a punt. The Bulldog offense converted all three opportunities into touchdowns to give Bowie a 21-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback Trinidad Sanders then connected with junior wide receiver Elijah Higgins on a 55-yard touchdown pass to put the Bulldogs up 28-0. Sanders found the end zone again on a 37-yard touchdown keeper midway through the second quarter to increase the Bulldog’s lead to 35-0. Just before halftime, senior kicker Nick Medina’s 45-yard field goal attempt barely bounced over the crossbar to give Bowie a 38-0 lead.
In the second half, Pflugerville started the opening drive in Bowie territory; but the Panthers drive ultimately stalled forcing them to punt. On the ensuing drive, senior wide receiver Aizayah Santiago scored his second touchdown of the night on a 41-yard pass to put Bowie in front 44-0. Pflugerville did not find the end zone until the fourth quarter when junior running back IK Evbayiro and senior running back Raylen Mclennan scored on runs of 28 yards and three yards respectively. The Panthers failed on the two-point conversion and extra point attempts which brought the game to its final score of 44-12.
Next week, Bowie will return home to Sunset Valley to host Austin LBJ at Burger Stadium. Pflugerville will travel to AC Bible Stadium in Leander to square off against the Leander Lions.
