Canadian Continues Domination of District 1-3A DII at Spearman
Any hopes that an old bitter rivalry between Canadian and Spearman could once again be rekindled faded fast as the Canadian Wildcats dominated defensively from the start. The Wildcat’s high-tempo offense also ran just as fast and as efficiently with the backup quarterbacks in service. The Wildcats even added a freshman QB to the mix this week.
The Wildcat defense was so dominating, in fact, that it produced one of the more unusual comparisons to be seen on a stat sheet thanks to a fumble recovered for a TD by Lynx LB Ernesto Sigala. After a huge hit on Wildcat RB Jesus Perez by LB Ezequiel Munoz that caused the ball to get loose, Sigala went 59-yards with the scoop-and- score with only 20 seconds left in the game. Spearman QB Reece Shields lined up the offense for the 2-point conversion and after gathering up the fumbled snap with a favorable bounce off the natural turf, hit RB Reid Harrell in the end zone, the only points allowed by Canadian’s defense. This caused the statistician to point out that the 4th quarter box score for Spearman was 8, while the offensive yards totaled by the Lynx remained at 6. Not often will team a score more points in a game than the total number of offensive yards trying to score those points.
Holding the Lynx to only 6 total offensive yards only highlights the defensive work by the Wildcats. The offense, led again by Soph. QB Grant McCook (20 for 32, 271 yds, 2 TDs, 2 INTs) steamed full speed ahead as usual beginning with a 20-yard TD pass to WR Trent Evans with 7:54 left in the 1st quarter. RB Alexis Flores then scored on a 2-yard run with 4:12 still yet to go in the 1st . Canadian’s freshman kicker Edgar Salazar was 8 for 8 on PAT attempts on the night.
Flores scored again from three yards out at the 9:07 mark in the 2nd, and with 2:06 left before halftime, McCook hit WR Matthew Lynch from 41-yards out to go in at halftime leading 28-0.
The 3rd quarter yielded two more Wildcat TD runs by RB/WR Tate Mitchell, one from two yards and the other from one yard.
Canadian continued to prevent Spearman’s offense from making any headway in the right direction while the Wildcat offense finished the last quarter with two more rushing TDs by RB Caleb Martinez from five yards and RB Jesus Perez from 1-yard.
Freshman QB Josh Culwell got the call-up to varsity this week to backup McCook, at least until Cavalier returns from an injury. Culwell showed great potential throwing 2 for 2 and 19 yards in the first series scoring drive he took down the field 50 yards in 8-plays. This depth at the QB position may seem impressive; however, the depth on the defensive squad is duplicated on several positions. State ranked Canadian (#2) remains undefeated (8-0, 3-0) as Spearman (4-4, 2-1) will travel to Tulia next Friday for what could decide the difference between 3rd and 4th seed positions going into the playoffs. Canadian will also hit the longest road of the conference battles to face Dimmitt (1-7, 0-3).
