El Paso Pretenders and Contenders
Montwood High School
El Paso Montwood is expected to have a very successful team due to the fact that the majority of the team consists of returning seniors which means a lot of chemistry and experience together. Montwood went from being 7-4 last year, to starting off their season undefeated by beating Wolfforth Frenship High School, Midland High School, El Paso Burges High School, & El Paso Socorro High School. Montwood is currently one of “The Teams to Beat” in El Paso and are definitely expected to make a run for the playoffs as long as they stay healthy. Montwood’s next game is an away game against El Dorado High School (2-2).
Pebble Hills High School
El Paso Pebble Hills High School is expected to have their first successful season this year with class of 18’ being their first graduating class, meaning their first varsity team with a roster full of seniors. Pebble Hills went from being 2-8, to being undefeated after knocking off El Paso Irvin High School, El Paso Andress High School,El Paso Chapin High School, & Franklin High School. Last year was Pebble Hill’s first year having a varsity team, so starting their second year with a varsity team undefeated is remarkable. Pebble Hills is the other “Team to Beat” this year, they’re looking to finally put their school in the playoffs for the first time since they’ve opened up. Pebble Hill’s next game is an away game against El Paso Coronado High School (2-2).
El Dorado High School
El Paso El Dorado High School is poised for another great season. Last year they made a playoff run and a 9-3 season. They came up short and weren’t able to advance to the third round of playoffs. El Dorado is having a slow start but are definitely trying to make a run for playoffs. They are currently 2-2 after losing to Eastlake High School and Midland Lee High School, and beating both Frenship High School & Eastwood High School. El Dorado’s senior quarterback Cedarious Barfield is one of their star athletes, his abilities in and out of the pocket are phenomenal. His ability to read defenses and take the ball downfield is outstanding. Every game he has over 150 rushing yards alone. El Dorado’s next game is a home game against Montwood High School (4-0).
Eastwood High School
El Paso Eastwood High School is also expected to have a successful season this year with having a roster with over 40 seniors on it, along with a lot of returning juniors and seniors. Eastwood went 5-5 last year, however this year they’re looking to avenge that record. Eastwood started the season off with an away game at Midland Christian losing by only ten points, final score of 41-31, after having a slow start in the first half. Then the following week they beat Bel Air High School 67-21 in their annual “Battle of the Helmets” game. After that big win they had their homecoming game against Permian High School and were up at the half, but ending up falling short to the Panthers 49-27. This week, Eastwood fell short to El Dorado in their first district game, with a final score of 27-34. Eastwood may have a record of 1-3, but they are working long and hard on their plays and strategies so they can make the playoffs. Eastwood’s next game is an away game against Franklin High School (1-3).
Franklin High School
El Paso Franklin High School is also on the verge of having a successful season, they’re trying to do their best to make it to playoffs once again after going 4-7 last year. Franklin is the type of school who you can never count out based on how they start the season. Franklin is currently 1-3 after losing to Permian High School, Copperas Cove High School, and Pebble Hills High School, but beating Midland High School. Franklin, regardless of their record, always seems to make a playoff run. Franklin’s next game is a home game against Eastwood High School (1-3).
Coronado High School
El Paso Coronado High School is currently working to improve themselves after going 2-5 last year. Last year they had a rough season and this year are looking to avenge that season. Coronado is currently 2-2 after losing to Midland Lee High School and Canutillo High School while beating Andress High School and Americas High School. Coronado is a school who is working hard to make improvements to try to make a playoff run. Coronado’s next game is a home game against Pebble Hills High School (4-0).
Americas High School
El Paso Americas is not doing too hot from the looks of the season so far. Americas went 10- 4 last year and was number one in the district but after losing a lot of starters that isn’t the case this year. Americas is currently 1-3 after losing to Rio Rancho High School, Midland Christian High School, and Coronado High School but beating Del Valle High School. Americas basically has a brand new team and has a lot to improve on together as a team. Americas is working hard together and has an away game this week against Socorro High School (0-4).
Socorro High School
El Paso Socorro is looking to try to improve after having a winless season last year. Socorro is working to improve themselves as a team by working hard and practicing as much as possible. Socorro is currently 0-3 after losing to Canutillo High School, Parkland High School, Bowie High School, and Montwood High School. Socorro is still working hard to improve, so hopefully then can win some games this year. Socorro’s next game is a home game against Americas High School (1-3).
