Canadian Claims Bi-District Championship
The Canadian Wildcats kicked off their playoff season against the Stanton Buffaloes at Greg Sherman Memorial Stadium in Plainview Thursday. The game marked the return of Jr. QB Casen Cavalier (12-for- 22-0 INT, 227 yds) after several weeks out with an injury. Although fans were relieved to see this development, they were also relieved to watch Soph. QB Grant McCook (4-for-5-0 INT, 75 yds) and Fr. QB Josh Culwell (1-for-2-0 yds) keep the high-tempo no-huddle spread offense fueled up and running efficiently in Cavalier’s absence.
The potent Wildcat defense came out and denied the Buffaloes of even making a first down in the first half. This was in all reality, a nightmare scenario for a team that entered this contest with a 2-8 record to Canadian’s 10-0.
Cavalier’s first starting series in four weeks (he had reps late last week) ended with a failed fourth down conversion on an incomplete pass. Cavalier was searching for some positive rhythm after three incomplete passes on the first series and he and the rest of the offense would certainly find it. In the remaining minutes of the first quarter alone, the Wildcat offense scored on 20 yard run by RB Caleb Martinez and Cavalier made pass connections for TDs from 31-yards out to WR Garrison McCook, 23-yards to WR Matthew Lynch (6-for-107 yds, 2 TDs), and 42 yards to WR Tate Mitchell (2-for-44yds, 1 TD). The second quarter looked much the same with Cavalier hitting Lynch for another TD from 9 yards, WR Trent Evans for a TD from 12 yards, and an 8 yard TD run by Soph. WR Rhet Pennington and Canadian headed for the locker room at the break with a 49-0 lead.
Freshman Kicker Edgar Salazar was perfect on the night hitting 9 for 9 PATs. Stanton QB Andrew Wheeler struggled all night to get the ball downfield in the air, getting picked by Canadian DBs Kelton King, Grant McCook, Matthew Lynch, and LB Baylor Campbell. The Buffaloes had a wide-open receiver, WR Jacobly Thorp, on a halfback pass from RB Cameron Yarbrough that was intercepted by Wildcat DB Nick Castillo.
Canadian wrapped up their scoring binge in the third quarter with a 6 yard TD run by Freshman RB Hayze Hufstedler and a 2 yard TD keeper by QB Grant McCook. The Buffaloes got on the board late when Wheeler hit Yarbrough with a leaping catch in the end zone for a 21 yard TD. The PAT by K Chris Hernandez was no good.
Canadian will move on to the Area Championship game versus Eastland at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 24, at Friendship’s Tiger Stadium, Peoples Bank Field, after the Mavericks beat Reagan County 33-22. The Canadian Wildcats have now marked the 20th season out of the last 21 that Canadian has made post-regular season appearances.
