I was privileged to see an advance copy of A Town Called Refuge a segment produced for REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL on HBO. The award-winning series is one of TV’s most-honored sports journalism series, with a record 18 Sports Emmy® Awards for Outstanding Sports Journalism, returns for more enterprising features and reporting when the show’s 248th edition debuts TUESDAY, NOV. 21 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.
This is a special episode for me as my I visited Coach Herring (our 2016 Class 2A Coach of the Year) just one day before Hurricane Harvey struck Refugio. I was there to do a preseason team preview and then head to Victoria to evacuate my mother from the storm.
I recently revisited Refugio for the district championship game between the Bobcats and the Shiner Comanches. Upon my return, I was contacted by HBO and offered the chance to see the segment ahead of its release. I cried like a baby.
I got on the phone with Coach Herring to talk with him about the show. He commented, "It's kinda sad that several tragic events led to this show, but on the bright side, people who watch it will no doubt be left with HOPE!"
This piece is a great example of what makes Texas high school football so great. The community of Refugio banded together despite the destruction brought on by the Hurricane and then rallied together after a devastating on-field injury. REAL SPORTS correspondent David Scott tells this harrowing, uplifting tale of heart and hope.
This is a must watch for fans of football... fans of Texas... and fans of good people doing good things! Catch it on HBO TUESDAY, NOV. 21 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.
