Rattlers Return to Promised Land
The San Marcos Rattlers accomplished a goal that had not been reached in 15 years Thursday night. By defeating Austin Bowie 31-26, the Rattlers wrapped up their first district title since 2002. Bowie came out strong going up 16-3 before the Rattlers started to chip away. The Rattlers put up a score right before the half when Prudencio Calderon found the end zone for the first time making the score 16-10 Bowie before halftime.
The Rattlers came out of the locker room fired up for the second half and it showed in special teams. Junior Running back Jamon Johnson took the second half kickoff for 99 yards and a touchdown to give the Rattlers their first lead of the game. The Rattlers would not surrender the lead the rest of the game as Mhyson Williams set Johnson up for his first rushing touchdown of the game. The Rattlers scored 21 points in a span of two minutes to start the second half as the defense came up with a huge fumble and set up the offense with a short field.
The Rattlers were able to stop Bowie twice on fourth down causing a fumble and the defensive line penetrating the Bowie offensive line to stall the running back. Prudencio Calderon came up big in the game with 85 rushing yards and two touchdowns adding 61 yards through the air. Mhyson Williams was able to take his two catches for 51 of the teams 61 receiving yards. Jamon Johnson continued to be a force in the ground game and added 96 rushing yards and a touchdown to his totals while also adding a huge kickoff return for a touchdown. Senior linebacker Michael Vargas was around the ball all night piling up 21 tackles. Starting outside linebacker Joshua Banda played big all night long with 11 tackles a tackle for loss and a half sack. In the secondary safety Therrance Soto was able to run the alley and collect 16 tackles.
As the Rattlers wrap up their Class 14-6A district championship season, there are plenty of notable performances. Senior quarterback Prudencio Calderon put together an impressive season with 1400 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns while adding 1206 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. Junior Running back Jamon Johnson was able to grind out yards all year with 1042 rushing yards and an impressive 15 touchdowns. Senior Julian Perez who put up 301 yards receiving led the receiving core. The defense was much improved from the previous year with strong performances from returners and newcomers. First year starter Therrance Soto has stepped right into the starting role racking up 77 tackles on the year. Senior Demarcus Hall put together a solid season with 4 interceptions and 11 pass deflections. Senior Linebacker Michael Vargas played tough in the middle all year and has piled up 97 tackles this season. Gabriel Urrutia led the defensive line with seven sacks on the year.
This season the Rattler were able to provide the San Marcos community something that they had not seen since 2002 with their win against Bowie. The Rattlers will play Round Rock Westwood at 7:30 pm Friday at Toyota Rattler Stadium
