8th Annual Leadership Summit

The Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation held their 8th annual Leadership Summit at the Lila Cockrell Theatre in San Antonio, Texas Friday and the event was packed. Coaches from all over, involved in all levels of coaching attended this great event. This is an event that doesn't focus on the X's and O's of sports or even very much about the career of coach itself. Instead, the Leadership Summit's true focus is just that... leadership.
From emcee Craig Way's opening quote of Edmund Burke, you knew you were in for something special:
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
After the color guard presented the flags and everyone stood for the Pledge of Allegiance, Coach Hugh Sandifer (Abilene Wylie) gave the invocation and handed things over the Texas High School Coaches Association Executive Director, D.W. Rutledge. He noted that 2017 was a "pivotal year for the concept of leadership" and referring to society, asked, "where have all the leaders gone?" That is the purpose of this summit each year... to continue to develop the much-needed leaders starting with the all-important role of coach.
The day featured a great lineup of inspirational, motivational, heart wrenching and humorous talks with a who's who of leadership speakers. The lineup:
Dr. Charles Breithaupt Executive Director of the U.I.L. - "Leadership form All Walks of Life”"
Neal Jeffrey Associate Minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church - "Higher, Swifter, Stronger"
Colt McCoy Former Collegiate Quarterback, Current NFL Quarterback - "Influence and Responsibility of a Coach"
Clint Rutledge Author/Director of the Fourth Quarter Leadership Institute - "The Uncommon Coach"
Stephen Mackey Founder/CEO of 2Words Character Development - "Be. Stand. Do."
Elaine Pasqua Author/Speaker - "Positive Choices for Outstanding Performance"
Spence Tillman Former NFL Player/Broadcast Analyst - "The Power of a Clear Vision"
Mike Singletary Former NFL Player and NFL Coach - "Committed to Excellence"
In addition to the speakers, Coach Randy Jackson (North Forney) was awarded with the 2018 Grant Teaff Coaching Beyond the Game Award. Jackson accepted the award and explained, "We say North Forney is a Leadership Academy that just happens to play football."
Overall, the entire day provided valuable information and wisdom that attending coaches will take back and put into practice. Events like these are just a small part of what organizations like the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation and Texas High School Coaches Association do every year.
