Coaching Carousel Continues to Spin
Dumas had a coaching change but the last name of their head coach did not. Chad Dunnam left for Amarillo and his brother Aaron Dunnam took over the head coaching position. Chad went 31-22 during his 5 seasons with Dumas. Aaron was the defensive coordinator. This will be his first head coaching job. The Demons went 9-2 last year and are on a 3 year winning streak going 25-8 during that time. Look for them to continue their winning ways as they drop down to Class 4A.
Chad Dunnam will take over an Amarillo team that went 6-5 last year to extend their winning streak to 9 years going 73-32 during that time. Coach Dunnam’s old team Dumas beat the "Amarillo Golden Sandstorm" 36-3 last year. The Sandies previous head coach Mel Maxfield left to be the head coach at Monahans. He had a 65-29 record during his 8 years at Amarillo. Coach Maxfield is currently tied for 39th place all-time in coaching wins with a 239-113-1 record.
Maxfield takes over a Monahans team that is on a 13 year winning streak. Their previous head coach Mickey Owens is retiring after going 121-41 during his 13 years with the Lobos. Did I mention that the Lobos were on a 13 year winning streak? Coach Owens retires in a tie for 170th place for all-time coaching wins with a 173-69-0 record.
