2018 Texas Tour Week 3

What is the Texas Tour?
For nearly 15 years our love for Texas high school football has sent us around the state to watch some of the truly great players that our state has to offer. We’ve seen Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw snap the ball to Pro Bowl QB Matt Stafford. We were sitting in the stands watching future Heisman Trophy winners RG3 (Robert Griffin III) and Johnny Football (Johnny Manziel) for their explosive prep careers. Our goal is to see as many future college and NFL players that a Friday night will allow!
#1 Austin Lake Travis @ #48 Austin Bowie
The Back Story
This game has three players that are in the top fifteen nationally at their position. The Austin Bowie Bulldogs feature Elijah Higgins, who unfortunately has been out all season and was scheduled to miss this district matchup. The Bulldogs finished 2017 at 8-3 as bi-district finalist and returned six on offense and four on defense. Bowie is 0-4 all-time against the Austin Lake Travis Cavaliers, due in large part to the great players that have played at Lake Travis.
There are thirty former Cavaliers playing in college or the NFL (including #1 draft pick Baker Mayfield), but Ohio State commit Garrett Wilson is supposedly the best of them all. Lone Star Gridiron has the Cavs in the top spot of Class 6A in a virtual tie with Allen to win it all this season. They’ve been to three state title games in a row so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them there again. Lake Travis was favored in this game by 25 points, but they’ll have to do that without starting senior RB Shaun Brown-Nixon (15-103 yds, 2 TDs; rec 1-(-1) yds) who is out for 6 weeks.
Who we came to see

DB Hunter Henry; #148 S in the nation
DT Kaleb Wenson; #159 DT in the nation
Austin Bowie (6A #48)
WR Elijah Higgins; #15 WR in the nation
DL Cooper Laake; #104 DT in the nation
QB Trinidad Sanders; Top 12 junior athlete in the state
Game Time
Lake Travis took the opening kickoff and marched down the field in less than two minutes. They scored first on a 25 yard TD pass from Hudson Card to Garrett Wilson. Bowie answered immediately and scored on a 6 yard run from junior QB Trinidad Sanders. That was as close as the game would ever be. The Cavs scored on their next five possessions to take a 42-7 lead. The Lake Travis offensive starters left the game with 4:05 in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs had a chance to cut into the lead right before the half. Bowie had the ball at the 3 yard line with one second left in the half, but Sanders rolled to his right and had to rush a throw into coverage. The ball sailed out of the back of the end zone so the Bulldogs opened the second half down by five touchdowns.
Less than one minute into their first drive of the second half, Bowie lost starting QB Sanders to an apparent knee injury and it looked as if he could not put any weight on his leg at all. The Bulldogs scored a TD in the third and fourth quarters, but it wasn’t enough to get back in the game.
Game Notes
WR Garrett Wilson has everyone raving. He is a shade under 6’1”, not particularly big, and ran a 4.69 forty at The Opening. On paper, it leaves you wondering, but he caught five passes for 173 yards and 2 TDs. He also threw an 11 yard TD pass. He did all of that in the first half.
QB Hudson Card was amazing. His passes looked very sharp as he went 15-20 for 331 yds and 4 TDs while rushing for 51 yards and a TD on six carries. Google lied to us and told us that Southside Flying Pizza was near Burger Stadium so I can’t recommend
it as a game night eatery, but if you are on South Lamar and looking for a good place to eat, we can recommend it! The stromboli was filled with meat and a fairly decent price.
