2018 Texas Tour Week 4

What is the Texas Tour?
For nearly 15 years our love for Texas high school football has sent us around the state to watch some of the truly great players that our state has to offer. We’ve seen Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw snap the ball to Pro Bowl QB Matt Stafford. We were sitting in the stands watching future Heisman Trophy winners RG3 (Robert Griffin III) and Johnny Football (Johnny Manziel) for their explosive prep careers. Our goal is to see as many future college and NFL players that a Friday night will allow!
#118 Katy Tavlor @ #37 Dickinson
The Back Story
The Texas Tour doesn’t get this far south very often because of work schedules, so we were very excited to see teams that we would usually only get to see in the playoff. Speaking of playoffs, both teams went to the playoffs in 2017 and are looking to return. The Katy Taylor Mustangs are a young team, but return 13 starters from a 6-5 area finalist. They have a brand new head coach who has installed a 4-2-5 defense and moved the offense to the Power Spread. Dickinson was an 8-3 area finalist, but graduated 14 starters. Despite the loss of a large senior class and Katy Taylor’s enormous offensive line that features three projected D1 players, the Gators were picked to win by 14. The names of the Dickinson squad may be incorrect. Dickinson does not have a strong online presence and there was not a trustworthy roster anywhere to be found.
Who we came to see
Katy Taylor (6A #118)
OL Andrew Coker; #49 OT in the nation; committed to TCU
DL Braedon Mowery; #18 WDE in the nation; committed to Texas A&M
DB Ben Montgomery; #142 S in the nation; committed to Yale
OL Hayden Connor; #5 sophomore OT in nation
OL Bryce Foster; #6 sophomore OT in nation
Dickinson (6A #37)
TE Jalen Wydermyer; #19 TE in the nation
DB DJ Warnell; #26 junior DB in the nation
Game Time
The Gators opened the game with a drive that took less than two minutes and ended with a 31 yard TD pass from Mike Welch (10-14-0 for 209 yds, 2 TDs; rush 7-94 yds) to Cameron Galliher (2-34 yds, TD). The Taylor offense took the field and the Mustang offensive line looked as big in person as they did on paper, but their offense was fairly one-dimensional against a very athletic Dickinson defense. The
Mustangs' drives ended in four punts, four turnovers, a sack to close the first half, and one touchdown, which was a 4 yard run by Brandon Campbell (11-55 yds, TD; rec 2-30 yds).
Dickinson overwhelmed the Mustangs on both sides of the ball to win 35-7. At one point in the third quarter, the time of possession was 24 minutes for Taylor and just over 4 minutes for Dickinson, yet the Gators were leading 35-7. Both teams started subbing players in the second half as this one was over well before time ran out.
Game Notes
DB DJ Warnell (9 tackles, FR, TD; KR 1-36 yds) was all over the field for the Gators and was easily the best defender from either team. Dickinson QB Mike Welch hasn’t been talked about as much as some of the other Gators, but he looked very impressive tonight as well.
If you are in Dickinson, try out the Dickinson BBQ. It was recommended by several people in the area and had won a local award, too. Make sure you get the onion rings. Some of the best I’ve ever had!
