Homecoming Crowd see Canadian Pummel Fritch 51-6
Canadian High School had been in full Homecoming mode all week whenever the Sanford-Fritch Eagles got to town and that certainly wasn’t going to help the Eagles cause. Given the fact Fritch has only 8 or 10 players on the bench, it was somewhat of a disaster when their starting QB Logan Moffitt went out with an injury at the end of the first offensive series on a sack that gave up possession on a fumble. The next play from scrimmage was a 33 yard TD run by Canadian RB Hayze Hufstedler. By the end of the first quarter the Wildcats had scored two more times and at this point there wasn’t any debate that the Eagles were looking at insurmountable odds just to stay in the game.
The second quarter began with a safety scored for Canadian when the Eagles long snap for a punt from the 18 yard line went over the head of Moffitt’s backup, Freshman QB Joel Watson and into the end zone.
The 51 points the Wildcats put on the board in the first half and the lack of scoring in the second half tells the tale of playing the backups and running the clock. Soph. backup to QB Casen Cavalier, Josh Culwell, a fine deep ball passer himself, was given different assignments under the circumstances. This was Cavalier’s first game this season to sit out the entire second half.
Fritch put together a drive in the fourth quarter that ended with Justin Gipson catching a TD pass from Watson with 7: 48 left in the game. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.
The Wildcats will certainly be tested next week as they travel to a neutral field at Vernon to face the Grapevine Faith Lions in a Saturday 2:00 p.m. matchup. And speaking of matchups, they will be key, as the Lions, 2016 TAPPS DII State Champions, are known to have several players that are D-1 college prospects.
Fritch will not be done facing Wildcats, as they will host Amarillo River Road on the 28th .
