Canadian Win Battle of Wildcats
Canadian rolled into Amarillo River Road ranked by Lone Star Gridiron as No.3 in State in class 3A DII and in the end would make the scoreboard reflect that respect. But when River Road narrowed Canadian’s lead to 17-13 in the opening minutes of the second quarter, it appeared that the fans were witnessing a true Wildcat on Wildcat cat-scratch fever battle.
Unfortunately for the River Road Wildcats, their ability to score had ended and the Canadian Wildcats were just getting warmed up. Only a couple of minutes off the clock after Canadian’s Soph. RB Hayze Hufstedler ran for a 27-yd TD, RR’s QB Lance Welps hit WR Cory Ferriera on go route that gothim behind DB Grant McCook for a 58-yd TD.
The next score would come as one of the two 32-yard FGs that Canadian kicker Edgar Salazar hit in the first half. As proficient as Salazar has been in the kicking game and showing plenty of leg for FGs longer than 32-yards, he had an unusually off night with PATs going 4-for-7 on the night.
Leave it to the home team to pull off one of the most exciting plays of the night, even in a losing effort. River Road QB Welps delivered a slightly long pass down the sideline to WR Bryson Phelps who in full stride reeled in the pigskin with one hand. Canadian DB Trent Evans had lost a full step covering the route and closed on Phelps, but his dive to prevent the TD failed to stop the big play of 77-yards.
Canadian’s defense continued to make the stops necessary to shut down River Road’s offense the rest of the evening, while QB Casen Cavalier, (19-for-32, 239-yds, 1 INT) kept of the fast working offense on pace using a total five different teammates as scoring weapons through the night. RB Hayze Hufstedler led the team with 12-for-105 yds rushing and 3 TDs. WR Garrison McCook snagged 7-for-69 yds receiving with 2 TDs.
River Road will hit the road next week and travel to Dalhart, while Canadian will make a two week home stand beginning with Highway 83 Rival Perryton next week.
