What is the Texas Tour?
For nearly 15 years our love for Texas high school football has sent us around the state to watch some of the truly great players that our state has to offer. We’ve seen Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw snap the ball to Pro Bowl QB Matt Stafford. We were sitting in the stands watching future Heisman Trophy winners RG3 (Robert Griffin III) and Johnny Football (Johnny Manziel) for their explosive prep careers. Our goal is to see as many future college and NFL players that a Friday night will allow!
#23 Georgetown @ #4 Hutto
The Back Story
Two playoff teams were squaring off in what had potential to be a high scoring affair. Georgetown was coming off of a big loss, and a surprising one at that, to 4A Stephenville. Meanwhile, Hutto dropped over 70 points on Pflugerville Connally during the previous week. Hutto has also been picked to make the state championship game this year. The Hippos were picked to win by 19 and 20 from two different sports writers.
Who we came to see
Georgetown
- none
Hutto
- QB Chase Griffin; #37 pro-style QB in nation
- WR DJ Baptist; Top 30 WR in texas
- DE Landyn Watson; #4 sophomore WDE in nation
- RB Chux Nwabuko; #22 APB in nation
Game Time
The Hippos explosive offense took the opening kick and 4 plays later (and 1:16 off the clock) were up 7-0 after a 17 yard pass from UCLA commit Chase Griffin to Caleb Forrest. Georgetown drove to the 33 and to the 13 yard line, but those drives ended in a punt and a missed field goal. Hutto’s offense started to kick into gear in the second quarter and scored three times before the half. Griffin sand RB Mekhi Kimble scored on short runs to take a 21-0 lead. The Eagles then marched down the field and scored on a 13 yard pass from QB Jackson Sioson with 54 seconds before the half. That was too much time. It took the Hippos 34 seconds to score again on a 21 yard pass from Griffin to DJ Baptist. The half ended with a 28-7 Hutto lead.
Georgetown received the second half kickoff and scored on a 44 yard pass from Sioson to Noah Drum to cut the lead in half. That would be the end of the scoring for the Eagles as the Hippo defense stopped the short passing attack the rest of the game. Hutto scored a couple of more times to easily win 38-14.
Game Notes
Hutto QB Chase Griffin (19-27-0 for 200 yds, 2 TDs; rush 3-27 yds, 2 TDs) who is committed to UCLA, but only holds offers from North Texas, Incarnate Word, and six Ivy League schools, but is the real deal. His size is probably what has kept him from being recruited more, but he looked good throwing the ball and looked natural running.
Hippo DE Landyn Watson (6 tackles (5 TFL), sack) is only a sophomore, but was a beast. He was double teamed a large portion of the game and still was in the backfield quite a bit. Last year, WR DJ Baptist had 232 yards in this game, but he has not put up the numbers that he did last year. That may be due in part to just ball distribution to a lot of different weapons.
RB Chux Nwabuko is 5’6” and was definitely the smallest guy on the field, but he played like a star (11-99 yards, rec 4-19 yds) and is lightning fast.
WR Caleb Forrest isn’t on very many people’s radar, but had 1,255 yards in 2017 and through five games this season he has 654 yards. He had 104 yards on 8 catches against the Eagles.
