Canadian Falls to Talented Grapevine Faith 41-20
Week 5 provided an interesting match at a neutral site in Vernon High School’s Brittain Field/Lion Stadium with LSG #3 ranked Canadian and TAPPS powerhouse Grapevine Faith Christian, 2016 TAPPS DII State Champions. Both teams entered the contest 4-0 on the season, the seventh time for GFC since 2005. Canadian was noted to have a 23-0 regular season win streak coming in, the longest in any class in the Panhandle area.
The first quarter ending 0-0 met expectations for those expecting a close game by two well coached programs, however, with 3:01 left in the second quarter, GFC running back Malik Caper broke free for a 70 yard TD run to extend the lead to 13-0 going in at halftime. The play was a preview of the challenge the Wildcats would have containing a run game headed up by a well-coordinated O-line featuring Caper, a legitimate D1 recruit.
The third period began with yet another break-away run through the middle of the line when Caper went for a 65 yard TD with less than a minute off the clock. GFC Junior QB Deuce Hogan (6-17-0, 61 yds passing), a verbal commit to Iowa, tossed a 2-point conversion making up for a missed PAT and the 21-0 lead put Canadian in jeopardy of facing a blowout. Fortunately for the Wildcats, two scoring drives and a wayward snap to Hogan, punting for GFC, was recovered by LB Ethan Brewster for a special teams TD and had the Wildcats back in the game 28-20 going into the fourth quarter.
Although Canadian QB Casen Cavalier passed for 221 yards completing 20 for 31 attempts, his interception free season was marred by 3 INTs in this game, turning over the ball too many times to give the Wildcats a chance to even the score. With a little over 4 minutes remaining in the game, the GFC run game took away any possibility of a Canadian comeback with a 6 yard TD by Caper, and a final 16 yard TD by RB Mark Saunders.
Next week GFC will host Legacy Christian Academy and Canadian will be open before going into the conference schedule which will resume on October 12th on the road to Tulia.
