Canadian Road Warriors Shine Again
Dimmitt – Canadian drew the short straw on District 3-3A DII road games this season, being forced to travel the six hour round trip to Dimmitt a second consecutive year to play the Bobcats due to the District realignment. And no, there doesn’t seem to be a good explanation, other than maybe the away games Dimmitt had to schedule. The Wildcats took it in stride, however, knowing that they have played two-thirds of their games on the road the past 5 seasons anyway. The Wildcats, their parents, and fans travel well. Very well.
The Canadian program is known to never take any team for granted and same was the case Friday night even though Dimmitt entered the contest without any conference wins at 1-8 (0-4). The fast paced offense that features a no-huddle-hustle-back-for-the-next-snap, spread ‘em out style had to keep doing their thing and ended the first quarter up 28-0. Not to mention the Wildcat swarming defense that accounts for zero points given.
The Bobcats gave up gave up 41 points in the first half, but they never quit fighting for any opportunity to score themselves. Late in the fourth quarter, Dimmitt QB Chris Martinez connected with WR Nick Fuentes on an exciting 49-yard pass play that set up a 1-yard keeper by Martinez for the TD. The 2-point conversion try failed.
The final score of the game came as a bit of a surprise to everyone when Canadian backup QB Josh Culwell got around the Bobcats defensive edge and jetted down the Wildcat’s sideline for a 73-yard TD. The Wildcat track coaches won’t be forgetting that play any time soon.
Canadian’s QB Casen Cavalier finished his night in the first half with 13-for-15 and 195 yards passing with 4 TDs. WR Trent Evans totaled 90 yards receiving and 3 TDs with 5 catches. QB Josh Culwell passed 4-for-5 for 30 yards, and had 76 yards
rushing with 1 TD. Dimmitt’s Chris Martinez threw 10-for-20 and 105 yards passing with 3 INTs, while Bobcat WR Nick Fuentes made 6 catches for 75 yards.
Next week closes out District 3-3ADII play with Dimmitt traveling to Friona to take on the Chieftains, while Canadian will host the Spearman Lynx in a rekindled rivalry that goes back two decades.
