Canadian notches 49-24 Win Over Spearman
CANADIAN – The Spearman Lynx gave the Canadian Wildcats a legitimate challenge in the first half of what would be the 33rd consecutive district win for Canadian, but couldn’t contain Canadian’s high powered, air raid style offense in the second half. This game also marked the 7 th consecutive District Championship for the Wildcats.
The Lynx brought a cord of fire wood to stoke the fire of a rivalry that goes back two decades, but they should have brought two, because they didn’t have quite enough to get through the second half. No doubt, the physicality Spearman played with the whole night was impressive. The Lynx looked the #4 LSG ranked Wildcats square in the eyes and made sure everyone there knew they meant business.
Even after Canadian RB Hayze Hufstedler, fresh back from a foot injury, burned Spearman with two explosive TD runs (one for 58 yards) in the first quarter, the guys in icy white and purple trim were not intimidated. With Spearman working inside the 10-yard line, goal-to-go, they were given new life on a 3rd and 9 that had been stopped short by a penalty giving a new set of downs. The next play, RB Jack Wilkerson bounced outside of an off-tackle power play to find the end zone.
After each team chalked up a 3-and-out, Canadian reeled off another score on the second play of the next drive with QB Casen Cavalier tossing a 55-yard TD to WR Garrison McCook. Then the Lynx went to work with a 72-yard, 11-play drive that burned six minutes of clock, capped off by a 1-yard TD run by RB Milan Salinas with 22 seconds left in the half, closing the gap on the scoreboard to just one TD. No doubt that hundreds of #TXHSFB fans checking scores on smart phones were raising their eyebrows to see Spearman within a TD of Canadian at the half, 21-14. Was there an upset in the making? Everyone loves a good upset with the exception of the team subject to being upset.
Hopes of an upset are dashed.
The third period saw the Wildcats come out and dash any hopes of an upset with two more scoring drives. One of those TDs was a 32-yard run by WR Trent Evans, who actually hurdled a tackler to give him the sideline all the way to the end zone in the last minute of the quarter. The Lynx were only able to answer with a 34-yard FG by Arturo Camacho and the 35-17 scoreboard began to seriously douse the rivalry fire they had lit in the first half.
Canadian RB Caleb Martinez had his number called to finish off two more scoring drives in the fourth quarter. Lynx RB Salinas ran in one more TD from 2-yards out freezing the scoreboard at 49-24, Canadian.
