Canadian Wins Re-match
For Area Championship
PLAINVIEW – A very competitive Colorado City Wolves (10-2) team had the opportunity to redeem themselves from last season’s playoff loss to the Canadian Wildcats (11-1) one round earlier this year. The Wolves had returned the majority of skill personnel and their line play was gaining strength and made an exceptional improvement since the 2017 match, scoring four times against the Wildcats compared to the one score a year ago. The Wildcats, however, have displayed an uncanny ability this season to disarm the teams that seem to pose a threat to Canadian, but come out and create separation on the scoreboard in the second half.
Canadian took the opening kickoff and 1 minute and 19 seconds later had put up the first score of the game with a 3 yard keeper by QB Casen Cavalier. The 6-play drive (yes, you read right, 6-plays in 1:19) used a 51 yard flea-flicker Cavalier to WR Grant McCook pass play to set up the 3 yard TD run. But the Wolves didn’t bring a 10-1 season record for nothing and after suffering a 3-and-out on their first possession, QB/DB Markis Monroe intercepted a Cavalier pass. Starting from the 50-yard line, Monroe engineered a 7 play drive that ended with a 29 yard screen pass to RB Bubba Williams, who made a brilliant decision to reverse the field and find clear sailing to the end zone for the TD. The PAT by Zack Thompson was blocked by DB Jack Koetting.
Early in the 2nd quarter, Wolves QB Monroe found Williams for another TD pass from 10 yards out and the 2-point conversion failed. The Wildcats answered with Cavalier tossing two more TD’s to receivers Trent Evans and Grant McCook. The 28-12 lead by Canadian at the half didn’t reflect the competitive efforts by Colorado City. The Wolves were still being taken seriously by the Wildcats and the adjustments made at halftime were evident by outscoring the Wolves 21-6 in the 3rd quarter.
Wolves QB Monroe narrowed the Canadian lead by 10 early in the 3rd quarter, but the 28-18 score didn’t last long as the Wildcats reeled off three consecutive scoring drives while holding Colorado’s offense to three 3-and-outs in the period. One rushing TD by Grant McCook and two by QB Cavalier (one a surprise 48 yard breakaway) did a lot of damage to any hope left for the Wolves.
With 8:09 left in the 4th quarter, another Wildcat 7 yard TD by RB Israel Guerrero sealed the deal and Colorado didn’t score again until late leaving the final score at 56-26 Canadian.
REGIONAL SEMIFINAL SCHEDULE AND THE SUCCESS OF DISTRICT 3-3ADII
With the success of District 3-3ADII advancing 3 of 4 seeds to the Regional Semis, Canadian will be matched with District foe and longtime down-the-road rival Spearman. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 P.M. kickoff at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon, Texas, on Friday, November 30, 2018. Spearman advanced with an exciting overtime victory against Idalou, 20-17. Tulia, the other remaining seed in 3-3A, will face Abernathy on Friday, the 30th, at Plainview’s Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium with a 7:00 P.M. kickoff.
