Wildcats Soar on the Road
When they say that the (#1 3A DII) Canadian Wildcats are ‘built for the road’ it isn’t just a motto, it’s a necessity. All Championship caliber programs must deal with road games knowing that the last five or six games of a season will leave the home turf for only practice sessions. This season the Wildcats face almost an entire month of road games beginning with the (#44 4A DII) Perryton Rangers, then travel to face the Fritch Eagles, before heading south on highways 83 and 287 to Vernon for the neutral site series with Grapevine Faith Christian Academy. The upside has to be that Canadian Wildcat fans travel as well as their team. That support is difficult to quantify.
Canadian settled another season of the Highway 83 Rivalry, taking the eighth win out of the last nine meetings Friday night. But it is never a given. The Wildcats prepared for a fired-up Rangers team after they notched a win over Childress the previous week and always expect a big challenge in Ranger Stadium.
After taking the opening kickoff the Rangers hammered away at the Wildcat defense for 11-plays, but the 12th play of the series proved to be an omen for Perryton’s night as Wildcat Soph. DB Jake Krehbiel intercepted a pass from QB Ethan Kerl intended for WR Kevin Arellano at the Canadian 30-yard line and turned it into a pick-six. That initial momentum for Perryton seemed to be stifled for the rest of the night.
Despite getting in the red zone a couple of times, the Rangers couldn’t find the end zone against the stingy Wildcat defense. Canadian’s D-line of Rhet Pennington, Saul Escamilla, and Colton Cooper combined for six sacks on Ranger QB Ethan Kerl. Canadian’s QB Grant McCook went 14-22-0, 2 TDs for 126 yards passing and provided several exciting moments for the fans by hitting a wide open WR Tate Mitchell in the end zone on a flea-flicker, and one of the best receptions of the night by soph. WR Angel Garcia, a JV move up. But it was the rushing game that totaled more yards against the Rangers. RB Hayze Hufstedler returned from a week off with a hand injury and despite wearing a splint on his thumb racked up 113 yards on 15 carries with 3 TDs with help of Jake Krehbiel pounding away at defenders.
Obviously, a good night for the Wildcats, ignoring any complications brought on by playing on a Friday the 13th with a full moon. The Perryton Rangers might think different.
