Wildcats' Dominance of 3-3ADII Continues
The (#16 3A DII) Childress Bobcats are obviously not the team that went to (#1 3A DII) Canadian a year ago in a game that ranks high in one of the most thrilling matches of 2018, but that didn’t limit the fight and physicality they had in store for Canadian on Charlie Johnston Field at Fair Park Stadium in Childress this Friday night. The Bobcats had a pretty rough pre-district schedule going 0-5, but made some changes that helped them upset a state-ranked (#13 3A DII) Friona team last week 27-7.
The opening kickoff began with Childress kicker Caesar Rojas unintentionally pushing the ball off the tee with his foot while executing the fake onside kick which is routine for the Bobcat kickoff team. Rojas was forced to cover the ball and gave the Wildcats excellent field position on the Childress 40 yard line. That mistake would translate into a 10-play drive ending with a 15 yard TD pass to WR Reagan Cochran from QB Grant McCook.
McCook went 26-40-1 passing for 221 yards. He continues to show to be a huge threat on the ground as well, extending one pass play by scrambling 26 yards for a TD, not to mention a number of times he picked up 1st downs with designed QB run plays.
To Childress’ credit, QB Trent Mayden (a stout converted offensive lineman) engineered a 9-play drive on the Bobcats first possession that ended with a 20 yard TD pass from Mayden to WR Devron Sims. Sims hauled in the tipped ball before it hit the ground in the end zone after LB Jake Krehbiel had attempted to knock the ball down.
The Bobcats entered the second period with the scoreboard at 7-7 and high hopes of pulling off an upset of the top ranked Wildcats. However, the second period would see Canadian score three more times and hold Childress to 7 going into the break leading 24-7. McCook passed to RB Jake Krehbiel in the flat (who looked to be his last check down) and Krehbiel took it 30 yards for a TD. Wide receiver Twister Kelton made his much-anticipated return from having wrist surgery and caught 6 yard TD pass on a mis-direction play that left him wide open until he was upended at the goal line. Kelton resumed his season by receiving 11 passes for 65 yards. Kicker Edgar Salazar ended the first half with a 27 yard field goal with only 2 seconds left. Salazar had an exceptional night going 5-for-5 PATs and 2-for-3 FGs. RB Hayze Hufstedler galloped on as the workhorse of the Wildcat ground game with 20 carries for 93 yards.
Canadian stretched the lead to 31-7 in the 3 rd period with a 5 yard run by WR Tate Michell from the RB position before Childress made their final score on another Devron Sims 19 yard TD pass from Mayden.
After the TD from a scrambling McCook in the fourth quarter, Wildcat kicker Edgar Salazar ended the scoring with 5:37 left in the game by punching through a 32 yard FG, freezing the scoreboard at 41-14, Canadian.
With the win over Friona, Childress has the best opportunity be the second seed from District 3-3A DII going into the playoffs with Dimmitt, Spearman, and Tulia left on their conference schedule. Canadian, while never taking any opponent for granted, hopes to cruise to another District Championship after playing Friona, Dimmitt, and Spearman. Childress will host Dimmitt next Friday, as Canadian will host Friona.
