A Hard-Fought Battle for District 13-5A DII Title
Pflugerville Weiss head coach Tommy Aultman has his program on track for a potential meteoric rise. In only their second season of varsity football, the Wolves faced off against the Brenham Cubs for a chance at the District 13-5A DII title. After going 0-10 last year, the Wolves entered Friday’s game at 8-1 overall and 6-0 in district. Brenham came in at 7-2 overall and 5-1 in district after their 48-7 win over defending champion and Leander Glenn last week.
The physical bout featured a heavy dose of the ground game and stout defense on both sides. Ultimately, the Cubs’ combination of dual-threat quarterback Garrison Weiss and running backs Daylonn McCowan, Javon Dixon, and Zyron Smith proved to be too much for the Wolves’ defense. The Cubs’ defense also made several big plays late to seal a 38-21 win and a district crown.
In the first half, both teams struggled to gain any momentum early. After a scoreless first quarter, the Daylonn McCowan put the Cubs in front 7-0 with a four-yard touchdown run. The score capped off a 94-yard nine-minute and fifty-second drive. Weiss responded on the next drive with an eleven-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tavian Cord to running back Demarcus Martinez. In the second half, Edric Whitley returned the opening kickoff 92 yards to put Weiss ahead 14-7.
Brenham immediately responded with Garrison Weiss’s 32-yard touchdown keeper to tie the game at 14-14. The back-and-forth affair continued on the ensuing drive when Weiss running back Jaden Askew ran the ball from 24 yards out to put Weiss back in front 21-14. Later in the third quarter, the Cubs tied the game at 21-21 when Garrison Weiss connected with running back Carson Draehn on a five-yard touchdown pass.
The game remained tied until early in the fourth quarter when Brenham kicker Victor Mendoza netted a 20-yard field goal to put the Cubs ahead 24-21. Despite holding the Cubs to three points, the Wolves were unable to capitalize on their next drive. Brenham defensive lineman Trey Escamilla recovered a fumble and set up the Cubs at the Wolves’ 28-yard line. Daylonn McCowan found the end zone again seven plays later to increase the Brenham lead to 31-21. The Wolves were unable to respond on their next drive turning the ball over on downs. The Wolves had a chance late in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap, but Trey Escamilla recovered his second fumble of the night.
With under a minute remaining, McCowan scored his third touchdown of the night to seal the game at 38-21. After the game, Coach Aultman praised his team’s effort throughout the season and noted the significance of making the playoffs. “It’s huge for our community,” Aultman said. Aultman also credited Brenham with playing a physical game but said that the focus now shifts to preparing for the playoffs. The Wolves will face the Lockhart Lions in Weiss’s first-ever playoff game at a date and time to be determined.
Brenham coach Eliot Allen also praised his team’s effort. Specifically, he gave credit to his offense for being able to execute against a stout Weiss defense. The Cubs will return home next week to face a playoff opponent to be determined.
