Canadian Hosts Feisty Dimmitt
to a 66-18 Victory
Canadian hosted the Dimmitt Bobcats on the Wildcats Senior night to another fast start, runaway first quarter score-fest by the Wildcat offense that will practically snap the ball seconds after the officials have spotted it. After the dust cleared from the first period, Canadian had scored five TDs starting with a 49 yard bomb to WR Twister Kelton (4 catches for 104 yds & 1 TD) from QB Grant McCook (8-for-13-154 yds-2 INTs-2 TDs, 1 rushing TD). RB Hayze Hufstedler (7 carries for 85 yds, 3 TDs) ended two consecutive scoring drives on the ground with a 2 yard and 43 yard runs. WR Bill Koetting end the quarter by receiving a 3 yard TD pass from McCook.
Although the first quarter looked to be the end of the game for Dimmitt, the Bobcats fought back and scored in the second period, holding Canadian to only 10 points. The highlight for the Bobcats might have been to prevent the shutout with a 7 yard TD pass caught by WR Gabriel Ontiveros from QB Mario Pena. However, one of the season highlights for Canadian came from Wildcat kicker Edgar Salazar. With only a couple of seconds left in the half, Salazar nailed a 40 yard field goal, which without question would have been good from 50 yards plus. Salazar also had a perfect night kicking PATs going 7-for-7. Wildcat K Alan Jara came in to relieve Salazar and kicked 2-for-2 PATs.
The second half opened with Canadian’s offensive starters going one last series and scoring on the ground with a 5 yard Hufstedler TD run, then backup QB Ethan Jackson scored on a 3 yard run. Bobcat WR Marcus Ontiveros received a 19 yard TD pass from Pena, making quite an unexpected, but great play on the ball by stripping an apparent interception from Wildcat DB Gary Anderson in the end zone. Ethan Jackson punched in one more Wildcat TD with a 9 yard run with 6:31 left in the game before the Bobcats scored in the last minute of the game on a 13 yard TD pass reception from Pena to Gabriel Ontiveros.
Next week will finish the District 3-3AD2 schedule with Canadian on the road to Spearman, Dimmitt hosting Friona, and Childress on the road to Tulia. The seeding from this district will most likely not change from these matchups going into the playoffs as Canadian (#1) will win the District title outright with a win over Spearman (#4).
The only scenario that would create interest in the seeding would be a loss by Childress (#2) to Tulia and a win over Friona (#3) by Dimmitt on the same night, of which either will be unlikely.
