Canadian Captures 7th Consecutive District Title with 37th Consecutive District Win
The Spearman Lynx came out on their last home game of the season fired up and not intimidated by the #1 ranked Canadian Wildcats. After Spearman lost a District matchup 35-14 to the Friona Chieftains, the Lynx had plenty to prove by knowing the Wildcats had blanked Friona 57-0. Spearman was determined not to be man-handled like Friona, especially in their own house on Senior night. The Canadian-Spearman rivalry goes back several generations and with those emotions and a good game plan by Head Coach Aaron Witten, a Spearman High alum, the Lynx held off the Wildcats to only trail the high-powered Wildcat offense 20-10 at the half.
Canadian opened the game by scoring on a 3 yard TD pass from QB Grant McCook (16-for-22-1 INT, 228 yards) to WR Reagan Cochran finishing a 7-play drive that took less than 2 minutes off the clock. This was a typical fast start by the Wildcat’s no-huddle NASCAR offense. But, the Lynx wasted no time getting on the board with QB Brenen Thompson hitting WR Jack Campbell for a 71 yard TD reception across the middle on the fifth play from scrimmage. PAT by K Miguel Zamara was good.
The next Canadian drive was cut short on their own 40 yard line when Brenen Thompson, playing from his DB position intercepted a McCook pass intended for WR Bill Koetting on the Spearman 43 yard line. However, as the Lynx threatened to possibly take the lead from the turnover, a Thompson pass intended for WR Judson Satterfield in the end zone was tipped by Wildcat DB Gary Anderson and intercepted by DB Twister Kelton.
Canadian’s RB Hayze Hufstedler (13 carries, 156 yards, 2 TDs) prevented the Lynx from ending the first quarter tied 7-7 by taking a draw play 60 yards to the house as the clock ran out. K Edgar Salazar missed the PAT. Salazar was 4-for-6 PATs on the night. Lynx kicker Miguel Zamara hit a 30 yard FG with 4:15 left in the half, cutting Canadian’s lead to only 13-10. Hufstedler would end the first half scoring with a 23 yard TD run with 3:04 left.
The Lynx had come out and held the #1 team in Class 3AD2 to 20 points and scored 10 for themselves in the first half. However, Canadian would bring some defensive adjustments and not take their foot off the gas offensively in the second half. Wide Receiver, Twister Kelton (2 catches for 61 yards, 1 TD) started the 3rd quarter scoring by receiving a 31 yard TD pass from McCook. The next Wildcat offensive series ended with a 4 yard TD run by McCook. As the third period ended, Lynx QB Brenen Thompson pulled off the most amazing play of the night. Thompson broke free from a pile up that everyone thought was about to be whistled dead, but the QB speedster turned the play into a 72 yard TD run.
Thompson’s 72 yard sprint to pay dirt would be the last score the Lynx could produce. Canadian would score two more times in the fourth quarter with another TD reception that went 27 yards by Reagan Cochran from McCook and a 1 yard run by RB Israel Guerrero.
Canadian has now extended a District schedule winning streak to 37 games as they secure the seventh consecutive District Championship. The Wildcats will travel to Wichita Falls, Thursday, November 14th, to meet Bangs in the first round of the UIL Championship playoffs. The other matchups in the first round from District 3AD2 will be Friona v Anson, Childress v Ballinger, and Spearman v Cisco.
