Strong Second Half is All the Difference
The Gunter Tigers (15-1) defeated the Omaha Paul Pewitt Brahmas (14-2) in the Class 3A Division II State Championship game. This was Gunters 2nd state championship having
won in 2016. This was Pewitt's 4th championship appearance and are now 1-3 in title games.

Gunter took the opening kickoff and showed off their running game. They went 70 yards on 7 plays and Clayton Reed ran it in from 14 yards out. Gunter led 7-0 early on. After stopping the Brahmas, Gunter took it down the field again and scored on a short run by Hudson Graham to take a 14-0 lead. Omaha Paul Pewitt used a passing game to move into position. Quarterback Cross Holder ran it over from 1 yard out. The 2 point conversion was good and Gunters lead was now 14-8. Gunter ball in Pewitt territory as the quarter ends.
Gunter finished the 10 play 57 yard drive with a 1 yard run by Reed. The 2 point conversion was good and Gunter now led 22-8. Pewitt was forced to punt and Gunter had the ball at midfield. Gunter went to the air and the ball was picked off by Kadrien Johnson who weaved in and out of traffic and took it 75 yards for a touchdown. The 2 point conversion was no good. Gunters lead was cut to 22-14. Pewitt then surprised the Tigers with an onside kick and had their running back La Jathan Allen recover it. Gunter's defense came up big though and stopped Pewitt on downs. Gunter then went to the air but Johnson got his 2nd interception of the day at the Gunter 37 with 1:30 left until half. The Brahmas took the ball down and Johnson ran it in with 10 seconds left. Their 2 point conversion attempt was good and the score was all tied up at 22 at the half.
Pewitt was forced to punt on their first possession of the 2nd half. Gunter then took their first possession and got a score on a 4 yard run by Peyton Lowe. The extra point made it 29-22 in favor of Gunter. The Brahmas were stopped on downs at their own 44 on their next drive. The Tigers were driving deep in Brahmas territory as the quarter ended.
Gunter scored on a short run to start the quarter and took a 36-22 lead. Pewitt could not do anything with the ball on their next possession and turned the ball over on downs at their own 42. Gunter scored a few plays later at Lowe took it in from 9 yards out and the Tigers led 43-22 and that is how it ended.
