Aledo Wins Historic Ninth Title

Marshall Made Them Work For It

The Aledo Bearcats (15-1) beat the Fort Bend Marshall Buffalos (14-2) 45-42 in a wild Class 5A Division II State Championship. This game was a re-match of last years championship game that Aledo won 48-28. This was Aledo's 9th state championship making them the first 11-man team to do so and tying them with sixman's Richland Springs for the most in state history. They are now 9-2 all-time in state title games. Fort Bend Marshall falls to 0-2 in title games with both losses being against Aledo.

Aledo opened the game with a nice 8 play 67 yard drive and ended with a 29 yard pass from Jake Bishop to Money Parks. Marshall was forced to punt and again, Aledo scored. This time a 40 yard pass to Jo Jo Earle to take a 14-0 lead. The drive was 8 plays for 92 yards. The Buffalo's responded as quarterback Malik Hornsby ran it in from 10 yards out. That tightened the score to 14-7. Aledo was forced to punt and Marshall had the ball as the quarter ended.

Marshall scored on a 13 yard run by Brandon Tryon. That score was set up by a 44 yard run by Devon Achane. The extra point was no good to make the score 14-13 Aledo. Bishop threw his third touchdown of the game with a 34 yarder to Parks to take a 21-13 lead. The Buffaloes responded with a 1 yard run by Hornsby. The extra point made it 21-20 with 1:30 left in the half. Aledo drove down and Bishop ran it in from 1 yard out to make it 28-20 at the half.

The Buffaloes were forced to punt on their first possession and got a good punt that pinned the Bearcats down at their 1 yard line. Aledo needed 6 plays to go the 99 yards as running back Jase McClellan took it the last 63 for a touchdown. That made the score 35-20. Another stop by Aledo and they took the ball down and kicked a 29 yard field goal. That made the score 38-20. Marshall got back in the game with a 17 yard run by Devon Achane. That made the score 38-27. The quarter ended with Aledo driving.

Aledo drove back down and McClellan ran it in for a score from 17 yards out to make it 45-27 with 6:29 left in the game. Achane ran in for another Buffalo touchdown to bring the score to 45-34 with 4:15 remaining. The Bearcats were able to take over on the Marshall on-side kick attempt. Aledo turned the ball over on downs at the Marshall 26 with 1:44 left. Marshall scored on a pass to Brandon Tryon. The 2 point conversion was good and the lead was cut to 45-42 with 49 seconds left. The Bearcats recovered the on-side attempt and took over. They ran the clock out from there.
