Alvin Shadow Creek With a Wild Win Over Denton Ryan

Big Thriller Ends With Shark Victory

The Alvin Shadow Creek Sharks (16-0) beat the Denton Ryan Raiders (15-1) 28-22 in the Class 5A Division I Championship. The game came down to the last play and Shadow Creek won their first championship in only their 2nd year of varsity play. The Sharks also played in the Championship game last year, coming up short against Dallas Highland Park. They now have an all-time record of 29-1. Denton Ryan is now 2-4 in title games. They won championships in 2001 and 2002.

Denton Ryan punted on their first possession. The Sharks took over and went on a 10 play 56 yard drive to score. Quarterback Kyron Drones ran it in from one yard out. He was initially called down short of the goal but after reviewing it was called a touchdown. Denton Ryan did a trick play on the kickoff return and Tra Smith took it 90 yards for a touchdown. Ryan converted a 2 point conversion to take a 8-7 lead. Shadow Creek tried a trick play of their own on their kickoff return but it was shutdown by the Ryan kickoff team. The teams traded punts and then the Sharks had the ball again as the quarter ended.

The Sharks drive ended with an interception by Raider defensive back Billy Bowman. On the previous play, the Sharks had scored a touchdown but they were called for a penalty. A wild play resulted in a touchdown for the Sharks. As Ryan was punting the snap went over the punters head. The punter was able to get a short kick off. The Ryan players stopped as the ball came to a rest. At that point, the ball was picked it up and ran it for a touchdown. Shadow Creek now led 14-8. The Sharks got the ball back and had a good drive going before Bowman got his second interception of they day.

The Sharks scored on their first drive of the second half when Drones scored from 1 yard out. The Sharks now led 21-8. The Raiders responded and Drew Sanders ran it in from 2 yards out. The extra point was good and the Sharks lead was cut to 21-15. Ryan had the ball as the quarter ended.

The Raiders had to punt. Shadow Creek took over and made a few first downs before fumbling in their territory and Ryan recovered. The Raiders turned the ball over on downs and the Sharks had the ball with a little over 6 minutes left in the game. Drones broke loose and went 55 yards to the Ryan 8 yard line. One play later, Kelvon Brown ran it in for the score. The Sharks led 28-15 with 3:08 remaining. Ryan was not done though as receiver Ja'Tavion Sanders caught a 26 yard pass for the score. The extra point cut the Sharks lead to 28-22 with 1:14 left. Shadow Creek recovered the onside kick attempt. The Sharks punted and the Raiders had the ball at their own 18 with 47 seconds left. Ryan made their way to the Shadow Creek 27 with 2 seconds left. A throw to the end zone came up incomplete and the Sharks came away with a wild win.
