Canadian Returns to Win Column In Week 3 at Bushland: 46-19
After last week’s disappointing loss to 4A Iowa Park, who came roaring back with a fourth quarter rally, Canadian’s successful game plan against another worthy opponent in Bushland proved to be their first win on the road this season. The Wildcats certainly knew that the Falcons were capable of protecting their house, Falcon Stadium, and they came out and proved that point in the first half.
With 5:04 left in the second quarter, Bushland had narrowed Canadian’s lead (18-12) to one score. However, the Wildcats, with only five minutes left, gave their fans another stellar closing act performance on both sides of the ball to score two more times before the break.
Canadian opened the scoring in the 1st period with a 5-play, 53 yard drive ending with QB Josh Culwell (19-for-33, 292 yds, 5 TDs) hitting RB Hayze Hufstedler (11 carries for 156 yds rushing, 1 TD rushing) for a 38 yard TD pass reception at the 7:48 mark. The Wildcat defense then forced Bushland to a 3-and-out so Culwell could go right back to work finding WR Reagan Cochran (3 catches for 73 yds) on the second play of the next drive for a 44 yard TD pass with 6:17 left in the first. The Falcons would not be denied getting on the scoreboard in Q1 with QB Coleman Junell finding WR Brody Sutterfield for a 32 yard TD pass with 2:10 left.
*Missed opportunity recovered and the PAT jinx
The second quarter produced plenty of fireworks and Canadian wasted no time in lighting the fuse. With only 1:48 off the clock, Culwell tossed another 14 yard TD to Cochran. The Wildcats held the Falcons on another 3-and-out, but Bushland DB Clayton Seales was able to pick off Culwell to give the Falcons good field position at the Canadian 36 yard line. Bushland hammered away at the Canadian defense for 8-plays until on 4 th and 2 from the 6 yard line, Junell found a wide open Seales crossing into the end zone, but Seales dropped the pass near the pylon and Canadian took over on downs. But redemption came for the Falcons on the very next play as DB Leaford Calder intercepted a quick jail-break pass from Culwell intended for WR Twister Kelton on the 2 yard line.
Two plays later, the Falcon’s big RB Ethan Fuentes took in the rushing TD from 2 yards out. With 5:04 left in the half, the fans had witnessed five scores, three from Canadian and two by Bushland without ANY PATs. The strange jinx included 1), the Falcons blocking the first PAT kick attempt by Canadian, then 2), the Wildcats failing to convert a 2-point try on their next TD. Bushland then had 3), a mishandled snap by the holder that failed to convert a PAT, followed by 4), another 2-point conversion failure by Canadian. Then the Falcons suffered 5), yet another blocked PAT after taking advantage to score after the red zone interception.
With the score tightening to 18-12, Canadian pulled out all the stops in the remaining 5 minutes of Q2. Culwell engineered a 7-play 68 yard drive scoring with a 14 yard pass to RB Jake Krehbiel with 2:57 remaining. THIS TIME (the sixth PAT try of the night) the PAT kick by Edgar Salazar was good. Two plays into the Falcon’s next drive, Wildcat DE Colton Cooper strip sacked Junell and the fumble was recovered by LB Ethan Jackson on the Bushland 21 yard line. The next play Culwell found Krehbiel open again, making a catch on the 3 yard line and falling into the end zone with a defender arriving late on the scene with 2:00 left in the half. Salazar put up another good PAT kick. Bushland did an excellent job to get to Canadian’s 11 yard line in the final minute, but Junell was intercepted by DB Angel Garcia on the 3 yard line. Canadian ran out the clock to go in at the half up 32-12.
*Wildcats open Q3 with a bang
If anyone had any doubts that Canadian might falter and give the Falcon’s a chance to get back in this game, that question was answered on the first snap after the Wildcats received the second half opening kickoff. After Culwell handed off to Hufstedler on a week-side counter, once the speedy running back made it around two Falcon linebackers the only obstacle to the end zone was green field turf. The 76 yard TD run gave the fans a preview of the coming Wildcat track season. Salazar’s PAT was good with only 27 seconds off the clock.
Canadian’s Krehbiel would score again on a 2 yard run as the 3rd period ended, with another Salazar PAT. With 8:11 left in the game, Bushland drove down inside the red zone and Ethan Fuentes finished the night’s scoring with a 3 yard TD and the Falcon’s got their PAT kick in for the night.
Next week the Wildcats will be protecting their own house against the Perryton Rangers on a Homecoming weekend. Bushland will be on the road to Stratford and play at the newly refurbished historic Sam Bass Stadium.
