Canadian Finally Celebrates Homecoming
Canadian 78, Dimmitt 0
Although the originally scheduled Homecoming has come and gone, a modified version of the Canadian High School Homecoming ceremony was performed on this Friday night while hosting the Dimmitt Bobcats in conference 3-3ADII play. And as promised, drum roll please… the 2020 CHS Homecoming Queen is Maggie Coffee!
The No. 1 ranked Wildcats, faced the Bobcats, yet another opponent that is struggling through the 2020 season for a number of reasons. For the players and coaches at Dimmitt, it shows just as much or more courage to face a long road and huge challenge like Canadian when dealing with all of the issues that comes with team re-building and navigating a program through the problems created by the Covid-19 virus.
The Bobcats began the night with a bold pull-out-all-the-stops attitude by kicking an on-side to open the game. Unfortunately, K Jorge Hernandez didn’t get the bounce they were hoping for and the ball was taken into the Wildcat’s possession by Matt McLanahan on the 50 yd line. QB Josh Culwell took the first snap of the game and tossed it to RB Hayze Hufstedler on a weak side stretch play which he took for a TD after WR Twister Kelton stayed with a block on S Jacob Aguero to make it smooth sailing for Hufstedler. With only 11 seconds off the clock, Canadian led 7-0 with Edgar Salazar’s PAT. This would be a precursor to the rest of the first quarter for the Bobcats.
But on Dimmitt’s first snap of offense, QB Gabriel Ontiveros made a great play completing a pass to WR Damian Arriaga with Wildcats hanging all over him in the process. But the Bobcats were held on the next 3-plays, punting to the speedy and elusive Twister Kelton which resulted in a 70 yd punt return for a TD with 8:47 left in the first, with a Salazar PAT added.
On the next kickoff, Salazar displayed his patented chip-shot technique, dropping the ball on the 13 yd line away from any receivers. By the time receiver Tavy Baty got to the ball at the 3 yd line, he mishandled it and it was recovered on the 2 yd line by Wildcat Luke Flowers. The next play gave Hufstedler the honor to run in another TD with only 3 minutes and 22 secs off the first quarter clock. The Canadian defense held Dimmitt to another 3-and-out and Culwell commenced to engineer a 6-play 69 yd drive that ended with a 39 yd TD pass to WR Reagan Cochran. PAT kick holder Twister Kelton couldn’t control the snap and rolled right for a pass attempt that failed.
The Bobcats gathered themselves up and sustained a 7-play drive until a pass from Ontiveros intended for Jorge Hernandez was picked off by DB George Abraham on the Wildcat 39 yd line. Culwell went right to work again and found WR Gary Anderson for a 60 yd pass reception with Gabriel Ontiveros making the TD saving push out-of-bounds at the 1 yd line. Culwell called Hufstedler’s number again for the 1 yd TD with 3:40 left. Ontiveros and company were backed up and had to punt out of their own end zone on the next series when a punt return TD by Kelton was called back. But the next play for the Wildcats yielded yet another TD pass from Culwell to Cochran from 50 yds out with 1:47 left in the quarter.
One more time the Canadian defense held the Bobcats to a 3-and-out and with the clock running out, Culwell threw three consecutive completions, hitting Freshman Luke Flowers on the third, a quick out pattern for another 27 yd TD as the clock finally registered 0:00 for the first quarter. And what a doozy of a first quarter it was with the Wildcat NASCAR offense totaling 48 points.
As the second quarter began, the Wildcats offensive tempo remained relentless, with WR Gary Anderson catching a 24 yd TD pass from Culwell with 10:00 left in the first half. Try as they may, the Bobcats couldn’t get past the Canadian defense. Culwell was able to execute another 6-play drive from the Canadian 37 yd line that ended with a 10 yd TD run by RB Landon Smith. All of Salazar’s first half PAT kicks were good.
The second half was a bit more merciful to the Bobcats given a running clock and the Canadian bench giving the starters the R&R they deserved. With 8:06 left in Q3, RB Ethan Jackson rumbled for 32 yds for a TD and a Salazar PAT. Then with 4:41 left in the Q3 the defense scored with a safety by Matt McLanahan taking down Ontiveros in his own end zone. The 4th quarter clock ran too fast for Canadian to score more than one last time whenever RB Aiden Dickenson a 4 yd run with a Salazar PAT added with 9:51 left in the game. As hard as Dimmitt’s QB Gabriel Ontiveros worked and sacrificed his body for his Bobcat teammates, they were still unable to score against the stingy defense Canadian’s Defensive Coordinator, Andy Cavalier has assembled yet again for the 2020 campaign.
With three more District 3-3ADII opponents left to face, next week Canadian will hit the road for Friona, then take on Tulia and Childress to finish the regular season and prepare for the playoffs.
